Gears, UE3 and AA

Hi guys,
I've searched b3d forums but couldn't find an answer : how come there is really little aliasing in Gears while UE3 doesn't do AA on 360 ?
Here and there, one might notice some jaggies (electric wires on fuel depot espcially), but still, the game is amazingly clean.
Is it they have implemented a specific process on 360 ?

I only play on a 32" HDTV so the screen might not be enough to see the aliasing...
Anyway, this post was in the "games" section, because I'm talking jaggies when you actually play.
Prey does a horrible job, Gears is quite clean when playing (I mean playing, not looking for jaggies) and I wish most games had the same polish !

Amazingly clean?

I see crawling pixels all over in that gamr it's really bugging me. Anything a couple paces away from the player turns into a jumble of ants like a PS2 game.

Did somebody confuse God of War and Gears of War again :) ?

One of the reasons for the relatively little aliasing is the pseudo-depth-of-field effect they have on the background.

It's a combination of things.
IMO the games color choices help as much as anything, and there is a DOF/Blur effect which also helps.

No idea what you're talking about. As for me I'm talking about Gears..

Well as Einstein probably didn't say but everything's relative.

Relative to WHAT tho? There's gross textuer aliasing in Gears allover the place. I can't even play the game anymore after all the hype about how supposed good it was to look and then I have to look at textures swimming and crawling like that. It's awful.

Not to mention the glow effect is washing out almost all colors and making everything look overexposed. Especially the sky.

I don't see much evidence of any AA either but that doesn't really irritate me as much as the crawling textures do.

Peace.

I'm afraid you're not playing Gears of War based on that description. The game is not at all overexposed on the default video settings.

Right-O. And I guess you claim there's no grossly crawling textures either?

I haven't changed any video settings. It goes straightout my 360 through component. Any other game or DVDs look just fine while gears is kind of likea pair of old jeans and T-shirt that has gone through the washing machine a few times too many.

It glows a lot but it's not saturated to say the least.

Peace.

Have you set the xbox to output in 720p and set the componenet adapter to HDTV? Because for the life of me I can not see what you claim on my 37" HDTV. On the contrary I was surprized after all the talk about UE3 not doing AA and still I have to really look for it to find jaggies. When playing the game and focusing on the action I can really see no jaggies. If none AA games look this goos I can't wait for more games to apply AA...

Except for the Nvidia-pre-G80-esque texture aliasing, Gears of War is a remarkably clean-looking game when considering that AA is supposedly not being used.

i heard from a friend that there was a feature of Unreal Engine 3 that helps to look less jaggies... forgot what it was

Lol, something is wrong with your setup, your TV, or your eyes.

I've seen this... I've also seen some terrible banding-type-stuff in places, too. I do not like.

I believe it does selective AA on certain surfaces. That and motion blur.

I spent a bit of time looking closely at the game this evening and in my opinion this seems to be the correct answer. It looks like anything static in the environment will receive filtered edges, but character models and some interactive objects will not.

One of the shots scooby linked to does a great job of exhibiting this (image 200%):
gearscomp.jpg

On the left we see Marcus's hand in all its jaggy glory, but to the right we have the two spikes sticking out of the grass. The one on the right is at a more favourable angle to show anti-aliasing in effect.

I took a (really poor) close up shot of a piece of cover to show it better:

I'll take some better shots tomorrow if anyone is interested, but I'm also hoping that someone could explain the principle behind this selective filtering.

Wow you guys are seriously too picky. Gears of war looks great. Iwata was right. They got out of the horsepower race because they thought the consumer would never be happy with the performance thewy "always want more" this thread proves this. Gears is the best looking game available and you guys are sitting here complaining about the graphics. LOL.

I see loads of jaggies on my 55" HDTV. In fact, I'm a little underwhelmed by the graphics to be perfectly honest. Can't really understand all the hype for its graphics. It does look excellent of course, just not as good as I expected it.
