Gears of War 12min Xboxyde

Weird thing about those textures is that some of them (second level, 1st pic) look better in the high def vids I have.
I guess we'll have to wait til we play the actual game. But I know I can live with a few low rez textures in that game !

So Gears has a few bad textures here and there, whats the big deal?

Don't know..looks like a pretty darn good game. I think that the most critisicm about this game stems from all the hype it gets. I don't think this game will set any bars for the gaming industry (or things like that) but we will see. Reviews should be coming soon.

You'll have to ask the people defending the textures and trying to downplay that fact by pretending they don't exist.

Personally though, I've already said that the game looks great, but certainly, not as some(one) named it, the "Best Graphic EVER". Its just that the screens and videos officially released hide the flaws so well that I was genuinely surprised that I would see textures in these new screens that gave me flashbacks of Quake II.

For those who feel that my criticisms of this game are harsh, feel free to look at my post history where I've been even more harsh with Lair, GT5, and Resistance. All of those are nice exclusives as well ;)

The sofas in the MP mansion level seem to have low rez textures as well. So what ?
Once again, everything may not be perfect, but 1up editors in the latest 1up show claim that the game is going to raise our level of expectation regarding other games' graphics.
My only concern is that I hope the game is worth the hype (at least half the hype).

Funny thing is I said the samething about some of the textures in this game weeks ago, yet still think it's one of the best looking games in 2006.

Apart from me missing the nuances of the English language, I would have to say that your response was illogical both from your conclusion that it is not the wall because the wall looks great from far (perhaps there are some close shots you have that show the wall looking different?) and from the fact that you never offered an explanation as to what it was, given that you say it is not a wall.

I did however do some more investigating, which ended up confirming what I suspected : textures in this game are not very detailed. The skin on the characters also looks quite bad form certain angles. That said I do like what they did with shading and the clever techniques they did with pre-baked skin folds and shading looks good non-the-less.

This is what I mean by low-detail textures. Some are ground, some are objects, some are wall. Click to expand.

To be honest though, I wouldn't have noticed this if not for the textures in MGS4 and Resistance (though this one has improved) catching my eye. So I do give credit for the Xboxfans on this board for making me a texture-critic...

There's something fishy about those screens. The HUD appears squashed and I'm sure that texture quality was higher in the X06 video.

Some rather naff captures to compare to that first pic:

Screen 2

By those images, i'd say the game doesnt have a single high res texture... They look really bad in that department...

Before coming on messageboards I wouldn't have known what a texture was and all I would have seen is the overall graphical fidelity.

When graphical nitpicks are pointed out time after time it's really hard to "unsee" them.

Yes, Gears does have a few dodgy textures but these are things you only notice in screenshots. It's all about taking a step back and taking in the entire graphical output in motion that matters.

The exception? We found several exceptions, and they've been acknowledged by others, not just me. If you have a problem with them, thats just too bad.

I have no problem as Gears has absolutely fantastic texture detail, and I'll enjoy playing it in a few days, no game is perfect and if you want to be completely anal you could nitpick some screens. If you want to pick on things to complain about with GOW, the texture detail is really a bad choice, there will be extremely few games in the next year that have texture detail on the level of gears.

It's obvious you are just looking for nitpicky little things to complain about and ignoring the screens that do show extremely good detail, you complain about a wall textures, I point out gears has killer wall textures, you spew a bunch of nonsense about "several exceptions"...whatever man, have fun with your cherrypicking of screens while I enjoy the actual game which by all accounts is stunning.

This probably is the best looking gaming coming out in 2006, which pretty much makes it the nicest game we've ever seen, and if you still feel the need to complain about it, that's just too bad.

gotta agree here.

I'll have it in HiDef in about 3 days to give feedback first hand as will about 2 million+ other people (despite the textures). ;)

also, there is a huge thread on NeoGaf by people playing it all week that pretty much say ... "yea, jaw dropping, standard setting stuff (for consoles)"

The motion blur + post processing + low quality jpeg from capture =>>> yes you can see bad texture on that screenshot...

Please people, I don't care if this game is the second coming of christ, but the textures in those 3 shots are clearly not the product of:
- motion blur
- depth of field
- any other screen-space effect
- image compression
All of that is clear from looking at adjacent edges/surfaces with different textures. Sure, the shots could be cherry-picked, and sure, there are walls in the game with better textures (especially when viewed from a much greater distance ;)), but please try to stay somewhat anchored in reality while arguing. I thought the technical level here is such that we can see things for what they are.

Here's a good example of the wall textures holding up to the scrutiny of some pretty extreme close-ups via the sniper rifle. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BAQB6NPH (23 mb, Multiplayer, no spoilers).

To be fair,(call me delusional if you want to) I definitely believe there's motion blur in that second pic. There's plenty of multiplayer footage floating around out there, and if you watch some of it, you can see that when somebody picks up a weapon or anything off of the ground, the camera shifts down and back up again pretty abruptly, causing the motion blur effect. I believe that's what's happening in that picture.
