Gaming website ownership?

I was just wondering about websites like this and other like IGN,TeamXbot, Gamespot etc.
How they usually get started, and who owns them? It seems like there is a lot of work involved in doing stories, moderating and other things. Besides the readers,who benefits from this websites enough to spend the effort anf money to run them?Also is there a way to publicly check the ownership of websites.

Also you could do a whois on the sites if you want to know who owns them. A lot of the viral sites like that PSP one have been discovered through those means, so i'm sure you can find a lot about every site by looking through their records
