And hasn't Nintendo had a history of shipping consoles several years after the competition? (N64, GC)?

The Nintendo executive's comment about "foreign developers say that the other consoles won't be available until 2006" can be decoded to mean "we aren't going to be ready until 2006, so it's useful for us to pretend the other guys aren't going to be ready until then, either."

I also love how he blames foreign developers, because obviously non-Japanese developers are less honorable (and break their NDAs more easily) than Japanese developers. How bigoted of him!

If Yama what ever his name is was still the head of Nintendo I would agree. Iwata seem to be trying to change Nintendo, with some of the decision its been making lately.
 
Well it doesn't matter who does Xbox2 (ATI or NVIDIA), they're still at the mercy of TSMC... look what happened to the NV30 :?
 
Not necessarily...MS has more time to plan this console than before, plus some reasonable success and experience with the original Xbox.

Whats stopping, say, Intel from fabbing the CPU, motherboard, GPU, *AND* MCP chip? They certainly have the technology and capacity for it. This is purely hypothetical, but I don't see why it'd be an issue if TSMC isn't going to get its act together.

There's also UMC as a choice...Nvidia and ATI aren't exclusively tied to TSMC, they're just both using them at this time. They can switch freely.
 
For Nintendo's sake, I sincerely hope they're serious about being quicker out of the gate. Their dawdling and arrogance has already cost them significant chunks of market share for the past two generations.

Correct! I've read atleast two articles where Microsoft stated that the Xbox 2, Xbox Next or whatever it name wil be, will launch earlier than the PS3. I'm sorry I don't have time to give some links... I think it was at Gamespot and Ign :?
Can we see a possile launch of MS next console as early as late 2004 or in the beginning of 2005?

XB2 in 2004...no way, they havent even decided about the basic architecture!

looks like PS3 is going to come out first!
 
That would suck.

2001-2004 is a very short life-span for a console... I'd hate to have to buy a console every freaking 3 years.

I hope they release it late 2005 or early 2006.
 
Actually, if you read J Allard (head of Xbox at MS)'s quote, he said "this time we're not going to let Sony beat us to the marketplace".

That was widely taken to mean that Xbox 2 was going to come out before PS3, but I can think of at least three other meanings to that statement. :D
