technicly any videogame RPG isn't an RPG at all, since you aren't really playing a role. so unless you dress up in a costume, whack your friends with nerf swords (or the real thing), and hurl foam balls at them (lightnight bolt, lightning bolt) while speaking in a funny accent while you're playing final fantasy, it's not role playing.

i consider zelda and diablo to be in the same genre.

I'm a role player with 10 years experience, so I know what a RPG really is, but RPG applied to video games just means something different, I tend to use the term 'CRPG', with C meaning Computer to talk about them, just forgot to do so.

Anyway I disagree about putting Diablo & Zelda in the same genre.

exactly my point. i've book and papered for about 15 years and while i find computer/console "RPG's" entertaining they have no "Role Playing" in them.

that said, the reason i lump zelda and diablo together is i don't really believe in the computer/console "RPG" genre. zelda and diablo are adventure games to me, with action based combat and decent storytelling.

Zelda and Diablo are quite different AFAICS. They're both adventure games, but that's where the similarity ends.

BTW I used to play a decent amount of paper based RPG (Paranoia, Call of Cthulhu ect.. ah those were the days :D). So I'm also a lot more discriminating then most on what I'd actually call a true RPG computer game. I agree with you that most aren't really RPG's but I do consider some of them to be true RPG games, Fallout for instance (amazing game IMO, brings back memories of Paranoia for me).

Another reason I bought a 'cube was because I expected updates to some of the games from Rare that I enjoyed on N64 (about the only reason I bothered with that console)... I was kind of disappointed when they got bought out and nothing I wanted to play ever surfaced.

I bought my GC for International Superstar Soccer, the AKI WWE games, Nintendo's games and Rare's games. Konami made ISS multi platform (used to be a Nintendo exclusive) and then promptly ruined it completely. Taking it from the shining light of Football games to one of the worst Football games on the market :( THQ let AKI go and got Yukes (the people behind the appauling exclusive Playstation WWE games) to take over, ruining that franchise as well on Nintendo's system. So that's possibly my two favourite franchises at the time completely ruined.. Rare just didn't release anything other then StarFox Adventures which I didn't even buy and when they were finally sold to MS I wasn't really bothered at all. Which is sad considering in the N64 days I used to consider then the best in the world. So I didn't get a lot of what I'd expected from GC (other then the Nintendo part which as always was great). But at the same time games that I had never expected came along to replace what I had expected Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Rogue Leader, Res Evil, Viewtiful Joe, TimeSplitters 2 (helped with the Goldeneye withdrawal :)) Winning Eleven 6 (Pro Evolution Soccer) ect. Nintendo didn't mess up with their own games either, while Mario Sunshine wasn't as magical as Mario 64 it was still a excellent game and Zelda was as great as ever (even if I prefer the style of OOT to Wind Waker). Also third party support was certainly greatly improved over N64. So I've certainly ended up happy with GC, even though at first it was disapointing (especially ISS, I was gutted when I got that home on launch day..).

I've bought my GC for Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Ikaruga and Super Monkey Ball. Picked WW up, because I was able to score the version with Ocarina of Time after the bundle sold out. Usually I don't like very time consuming games, so reluctantly I started to play it, got hooked and finished it ... loved it, more please
