Game over for PSX

A burning laser operates at a higher temperature hence the term burner. Once the laser goes out you can't burn or read DVDs, but you'll still be able to read CDs so your $750 PSX will at least be able to play PS1 games with faster loading times and filtering after a couple years.

Nice! :devilish:
Well, is there a rough estimate on life expectancy of PC drives? Just so i know...

Aren't the burners then built to different, higher standards, using materials that can stand higher temperature better, than plain readers?
Or do they just stick a higher temp laser in with readers lens that melts as soon as the lazer hits it?
I don't think a burner's life is that much shorter in reality, especially as the laser does not "burn" at full heat while reading, and even if you burned 2 dvd's a day, that would still be relatively short time.

Well obviously, nice drives will be built with higher quality materials, but even "normal" players tend to die eventually (might take years and years but still...).
I'd understand if a burner had a lower life expectancy. Mine is a Liteon, so that grants it a 2x life expectancy than a PSX straight away ;) KIDDING!

Can't find "entertainment" nor "SCE" in that page

there is no "entertainment" nor "SCE" in ken kutaragi too

onto serious and less spin-mantics, it obviously from all we have, psx is all kk as with ps1 ps2 psp. unless better informed like archiezzz can verify more.

in such it shows, playstation, gaming isnt everything. and it also bring into thought how actually prepared is sony's "convergent", with game console? imo its alway hard to convince one of something that always have been seen as a "toy" into some pro entertain centre.

only playstation one need is a playstation imo.
imo ps1,2,p,3,9 should/will alway stay a simple console no matter how different people tell u.

So u want to be stuck with the same format 20 years from now??? That's one hell of a limited view.
Do u really think "consoles" as such will still exist 20 years from now? Things will be very different then. That is, if we're still alive and haven't been killed by an alien race who needs lots of water.

Well from personal experience, if you burned 3 movie DVDs a day (90 minute total burn time at 4X), a good drive will last about a year. Of course this isn't an issue on PCs because you can just buy another burner for like $60.

OTOH a plain DVD reader can last for many years if you watched only one DVD movie per day (90 minute running time).

Hey it's an issue for me, i'm broke!! :D

why limited view? unless i can be shown the "extra features" are really worth the shout and not just plenty of shouting, then i just want buy a cheap simple game box.
game console are going to be intensive used for gaming and that why it should be built for gaming. only so much to fit a glass.

To each his own i guess.

I thought I already clarified it? :?:

I'd say the same with mobile phones. A lot of features they have have nothing to do with phoning people, but people want them. Personally I'd rather have one integrated box that does everything than five specialised boxes.

Me too but only if the all-in-one device have the features that I find most important in the individual devices respectively. As an example compact size, sound quality, flash capacity, and battery performance in an MP3 player to me is VERY important and all need to be in the all-in-one device to make that device attractive. DV input in a DVD recorder is VERY important to me so if a all-in-one DVD recorder/game console doesn't have that feature then it's useless as a DVD recorder and there's no point to owning said device. A mobile phone with PDA/TV/Game/MP3/Camera would be the ultimate all-in-one device, but if one of the important features of the individual devices is left out, then it won't get much use therefore becoming useless.

Well obviously if the one box really lacks quality and features, people should prefer having separate boxes that do their things properly, but in the end if the one box has features that, even if inferior, are "close enough" to what people get from buying 7 different systems, it's a Good Thing (TM). Who wants their house filled with tens of different boxes when you can have one that does everything!

Obviously, the "close enough" factor is a subjective opinion. Personally, PS2's DVD playback was "good enough" for me... for the first few months at least.

For me any DVD player that doesn't come with a wireless remote is pretty much useless. One exception would be on a PC, where I'm only sitting like two feet from the monitor to watch DVDs so a mouse is good enough.

Definately, in fact i had a third party PS2 remote pretty soon, waiting for the official one to come out.

PSX Lives
Hybrid system not as dead as we'd assumed.
by Anoop Gantayat

February 24, 2005 - Reports circulated the web yesterday stating that Sony had halted production of the PSX hybrid electronics device. While those reports were true, and production on the system in its current form has come to an end, reports of the PSX's death may have been a bit premature.

In comments with Japanese site Famitsu.com, Sony representatives revealed that production of the PSX system has stopped, but only because Sony has produced the number of units of the current model that had originally planned to generate. This does not mean that the system is being killed-off -- in fact, Sony plans to continue producing and selling the PSX once current reserves have sold out, but possibly in the form of a new model, just as the 5500 and 7500 series models replaced the original 5000 and 7000 series.

So perhaps it would be accurate to state that the series 5500 and 7500 PSX models have finished their production runs, and those in Japan who want one of these models would do best to head to retail and pick one up.

That tells a different story i guess...
