Game Informer - Factor 5 Q&A

 Classic!

I thought by now people would be used to dev's favouring the console that's hosting their game! C'mon, it's common sense - don't bite the hand that feeds you! Anyways, for every negative thing he had to say about the competition, you won't go far to find another dev there that's more than willing to drop the dime on the PS3 - tit for tat - same old shit!

Here's hoping that Lair turns out to be good - it certainly looked promising. And no, I don't think SONY would drop them if the game bombs... remember Guerilla and Shellshock?

I frankly see them doing exactly opposite an integrating them into SCEWW.

Yeah, I certainly think SONY invest more in the actual talents, which is pretty cool IMO. Shows they have a lot of faith in the dev's talent, and hopefully guys like Guerilla will pay that faith back. KZ3 is a good place to start!

I don't think sony makes it a habit of integrating dev teams that's aren't overly successful. Anyway If the game isn't good, I can see them going in a different route with a different dev house. I can see MS doing the same with silicon knights if too human doesn't work out.

Like I said, I hope the game is good, because julian always talks the talk, but doesn't usually walk the walk when it comes to gameplay.

I think they already started with KZ L

The thing that strikes me about his comments isn't so much that he talks up his current bed buddy or that he bashes MS/XBox. It's what he is bashing/praising that puzzles me. HDMI? Sure if he said "cell is huge and has so much potential" or "I like the storage ability of BR" then that's one thing, but HDMI? :???:

That's what strikes me as odd. It's like saying, "Hey you know when I found out Sony was using those inferior 'X O square triangle' buttons again I said to myself, 'you know what, I like the a-b-x-y buttons much better because I can't do what I was planning on doing with those "X O" buttons, so I'm going XBOX for my next game. English Alphabet for life!"

I'm sure if he went to MS and said, "I want to make my game 1080p and I don't like being a multiplatform developer as I like to get to know the hardware and get the most out of it by focusing all my time and energy on doing so." that MS would let him know that 1080p was in the cards and that the team would love to have his efforts exclusively on their platform.

For some reason though I get the feeling he had his thoughts about MS and XB360 before he had any meeting that may or may not have happened.

Look up Eggebrecht's comments about XNA in 2005, he was gushing about how great the dev tools were from MS. Now his tune has changed completely, this guy is basically a shill imo, for the right amount of money or the right deal he'll say almost anything.

There is the possibility that he's comparing his game on component vs HDMI on some of the upcoming xv colorspace displays (like Sony’s $33,000 monstrosity). He's statement is more along the lines of HDMI allowing gamers to really see the game. That's going to vary from display to display, of course. And it’s my understanding that some displays that convert the HDMI signal to analog don't see an improvement over component. However, displays that keep the signal all digital, and possibly even use the xvYCC colorspace, may see a rather notable improvement that makes the game (or his game in particular) really "pop." That's just speculation on my part, but seems plausible.

As limited as the userbase of 1080p capable displays is, it is a sliver of a percentage of this group that will have a tv capable of "deep color" via HDMI 1.3 in the lifetime of this game's sales.

Translation:

HDMI is not a reason to choose one platform over the other.

Other reasons, sure there's plenty. He could complain about many things on xb360, like poly throughput, or limited texture and pixel fillrate, or limited ram for larger textures, or lack of tesselation unit, or the difficulty of programming xcpu over cell, or MS's inferior dev tools, or the 5% hit for 4xAA, or a myriad of other things, heck he might even complain about the smaller userbase limiting his ability to sell his game. HDMI though, not so much.

Where exactly is he saying the dev tools from MS suck now?

I get kind of bored by all the speculation about the motion sensing sixaxis being a last minute rip off of the Wii.
What if it was, what if it wasn´t. Does it really matter?

I think a lot of the decision making of details is done quite late when they have detailed information of the price, supply and quality of different components.

We all now about the hdmi port and USB ports that was cut away, the standard HDD that was added, the rumble that was removed and the motion sensing that was added.

IIRC MS decided to add 256 MB RAM about 6-9 months before production started and the RAM happened to be the bottle neck component at launch, it probably was the right decision in the long run, a bit similar to the blu-ray diode supply of the PS3 at launch.
Whatever Nintendo changed is hard to know as they've been light on details all the way.

The game industry is very dynamic, you can not lock the complete spec 18 months before production starts, the market and competion will change during that time. "Only the paranoid survive" as Paul Otellini wrote.

The ongoing dispute with Immersion may also have played a role in the decision to add motion sensing, giving them a temporary alibi for skipping rumble and avoiding more lawsuits.

I also get kind of bored by the fact that pretty much every thread irrespective of the subject contains a certain amount of Sony and PS3 bashing by the usual suspects.

It's not like Eggebrecht was alone in his praise for XNA, when the press release had quotes from over 20 companies.

And what happened to that supposed admiration for XNA?? He suddenly forgot all about it. When discussing the platforms, it doesn't even get a mention?? If he liked it so much, you'd think he might actually give some props to 360 for it's good dev enrionment...but nope, he wines about how it can't do 'true HD' which in itself is a complete ****** PR statement. True HD is 720p for anyone with half a brain. This guy is a little low on integrity imo.

I think you know what he meant....
yea, like
this guy is basically a shill imo, for the right amount of money or the right deal he'll say almost anything.
I think that's just how it works, if you want to keep your doors and options open.
That's just common business sense.
You lick the ass that feeds you, as the saying goes, or does it.
Nothing to get overly exited there. It's just funny we expect them to be completely honest about these things, when it's cold dirty business we're dealing with here and statements like this shold be taken for what they are, PR.
They don't love you, they don't need to be honest and true to you. Grow up!

He's not making a game for xb360 right now, he's making it for PS3. Of course he's doing PR for the company that's currently paying him. It's naïve to think otherwise, and silly to get worked up for him not praising XNA right now.
He will, if they ever make a game for xb360, just have some patience.

Why would he have to bring XNA when there was no question about it ? Why do I have the impression that a lot of people like it when interviewees praise every single one out there, as if having opinions and prefernces was a crime against reason ? You're making a fuss out of nothing, really !

Of course he will, because he's a shill who sides with whoever he's working for at the time. Thanks for backing up my point ;)

I'm not saying I blame the guy, just that I don't really believe a word that comes out of his mouth.

Oh great, the "let's hate on F5 circle jerk" again. Why does it not surprise me?

This just like the "dinner" crap from Kojima, except I don't see anyone hating on him for that
