My hunch is that free is yours to keep and re-download and play whenever (i.e., giveaway or just free to begin/end with), whereas free to play is temporary (i.e., a free weekend or has an online component that may shut down and render the game unplayable with MTX as the business model), but the answer may be whatever.

Assassin's Creed 2 will be free to own on UPLAY on April 14th - It appears that Ubisoft will be offering the second part in its Assassin's Creed series for free next week. According to Mydealz and industry insider ZhugeEX, Ubisoft will be giving away Assassin’s Creed 2 on UPLAY on April 14th

Get Just Cause 4 and Wheels of Aurelia for Free
The new weekly freebies are now underway on the Epic Games Store where you can now pick up free copies of Just Cause 4 Reloaded for Windows and Wheels of Aurelia for Windows and macOS. As always, these will be yours to keep if you pick them up within the next seven days. After that the next giveaway will kick in, which is For The King. Here's word on this week's promotion:

Just Cause 4 Standard Edition
Jump into an action-packed open-world sandbox experience and cause chaos with a wide selection of weaponry, vehicles and gear. Strap into your wingsuit, equip your fully customizable grappling hook, and get ready to bring the thunder!

Wheels of Aurelia
Embark on an immersive road trip through the gritty western coast of Italy during the roaring 1970’s. Playing as Lella, a bold, spunky woman, experience the sights and sounds of a tumultuous time in Italy’s history while uncovering events from Lella’s past.

Get Manual Samuel for Free
The proud folks at Humble announce Manual Samuel is the latest freebie they are giving out to subscribers of the Humble Bundle newsletter. You can sign up through this page, and if you already get the newsletter then you just have to claim your copy. Manual Samuel is an adventure for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and fulfillment is handled via a Steam key.

Twitch Prime has a couple of bonus games on top of the monthlies: https://twitch.amazon.com/tp
Yono and the Celestial Elephants free until May 20th (Steam link)
Old School Musical free starting Apr. 24th (Steam link)

For the King is up on EGS. Next week it’s Crashlands and Amnesia: Dark Descent.

iPhone and iPad people (in the USA, at least) have Hitman Go free until sometime today, and Monument Valley 2 free until maybe June 11th? And a couple of the Kingdom Rush tower defensers.

If you’re insatiable, I think Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages (Steam link) is still an indieGala freebie (middle left on the main page), among others like Chronology.

Cuban Missile Crisis for Free

Cuban Missile Crisis is now free to keep on Indiegala, offering the chance to own this game that was first released by 1C Company in 2005 . This can allow you to take your mind of the current global crisis with a real-time and turn-based strategy game based on a previous global crisis. Cuban Missile Crisis takes an alternate approach to history where rather than being settled peacefully, the 1962 standoff between the US and USSR escalates into a full nuclear war.

Developer Paracosma announces UnnamedVR is no longer unnamed, as they've re-launched the game under the trendy moniker Shelter in Place. They've also lowered the price of the game to free, which should help remove any potential distaste over the opportunism of the name change. Word is: "'Shelter in Place' is an open-ended sandbox virtual reality game in which users find themselves in a large virtual mansion. Within the mansion, players can explore and enjoy more than 15 rooms containing various mini-games providing hours of entertainment for all interests and ages." This requires a virtual reality headset, and you can pick up a copy through Steam, Oculus, or Viveport.

Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation Steam key free from Humble for another day or so. Remember to reveal (and activate) the Steam key within a week or so.

Galaxy Forces VR now free on Steam.

Gravity Force 20 looks like the (2D) inspiration for Galaxy Forces VR. It’s a freeware remake of the Amiga original, Gravity Force 2, named and made in Unity for its 20th anniversary by the same two guys who made the original in assembly.

Ps: Ive noticed it's suddenly become a thing developers wanting you to link your steam account to them why ?
Maybe to learn about (the types of games) you (play), maybe to ensure they only give keys to “legit” accounts or those that don’t already have it (GOG requires it for Connect to verify you own a game). There’s got to be a ton of email addresses created with the sole purpose of being loaded up with free-to-claim Steam/Epic/Origin games for future resale as starter game libraries.

Ay ay ay, no es bueno! —Simpsons bee guy

FYI, adding GTA5 also nets you a ‘$10 off anything $14.99+‘ coupon for Epic Store’s current sale, which you can use to do crazy things like get The Witcher 3 GotY or AC Origins for $5, Trover Saves the Unuverse for $8 (though I have no idea how well VR games work through Epic), Metro Exodus or AC Odyssey for $10, or Control for $20, IIRC. Someone at Reddit posted a pic of their front page prices, in case the site is still fubarred and you want to plan.

Crusaders Kings 2: Horse Lords DLC is free at Steam til I dunno. (The base game is free if you don’t already have it.)

UPlay has the Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece Discovery Tours for free until the 21st: US and EU links here. (I think they’re included with AC Origins/Odyssey, so you may already have them.)
