first in-game Phantasy Star Universe screenshots

is this a mmorpg ?

Because if it is you'd have to compare it to other mmorpgs . Only example would be final fantsy . And compared to that these graphics are good . If its a normal rpg then yea you guys are right the graphics aren't that great. Of course if the game is great who cares

The previous Phantasy Star Onlines were more in the vein of Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate, or Guild Wars.

And the character models(mainly faces) maybe better than Final Fantasy, but I don't think the environments are. Look at the first picture, same flat poorly textured ground as in the dreamcast game, with a 2d bitmap background.

Character complexity doesn't seem to have gone up that much.

I was actually refering to the one with the close up on two characters. Anyway, when looking at your screenshots, PSO´s geometry really looks far behind PSU´s (boxy environments with very blocky environments vs a circular lobby with characters with more detail).

That´s how I see it, just saying before you respond with one of your 1000-word essays on how a slightly better IQ manages to make DC games look better than PS2´s.

The lobby in the Dreamcast versions where lots of character at once could meet to break off into teams of four was circular, too.

The lobby wasn't anywhere near as big though. But compare these pics to even the stuff found in Episode 2, let alone card battle and try to say they're an improvement.

Anyone heard if this is going to be like PSO or a real MMORPG? I kinda hope they keep it like PSO with maybe instead of 4 like a team of 10 in a larger areas. I know many hate it but damn PSO was addicting to me.

I hope they tighten the focus and create more unique experiences. It would be great to have something that lived up to the idea of a multiplayer Zelda.

something about the way Sega uses color palettes and geometry gets on my nerves... You can tell a Sega game miles away its like they use the same 16-bit palette over and over again no matter how many colors are at their disposal....

Only VF imho ever branches out beyond the old "sega" way.

and I am a Sega Fanguy but I wish they would update their style with the times :devilish:

I'm a SEGA fan too and I totally agree. I think it also has to do with lighting too. Actually any of the NAOMI 2 games and some of their arcade games have very nice visuals. For example VF4, Club Kart, and that Ep I Star Wars Racer.
