fireworks from the air

Much of that architecture is amazing IMO, but damn, so ill kept! Basically all of those east bloc buildings are just crumbling and falling apart. In another ten, twenty years they'll have to be demolished or else become unlivable/dangerous unless something's done.

Buildings like those have a very weird pseudo-nostalgic effect on me. I don't know why.

They represent the architectural style which was seen as futuristic in the 30s up to the 60s roughly, so when at least I was still a kid it was still a futuristic style of architecture. The Jetsons, Flash Gordon, all kinds of pop culture is full of stuff like that.

The general style is called "socialist realism" with some variations of brutalist architecture. One of the reasons of the weird structural appearance in many buildings are the various ideological constraints by the ruling elites, that the architects had to abide or (often) bend around, if they wanted to express some bit of unique individual approach. Also, due to the slow adoption of new construction methods and materials, a lot of additional compromises had to be considered on top of the centralized economics of the supply-demand chain. These things are really not cheap to support and renovate, since this part of the plan was more or less an after thought.
