Final confirmed Jan NPD's

The storage issue has been debated to death. Wake me when a game can't be reproduced on dvd9.:???:

Well the first step would be acknowledging that you don't even get DVD9 on the Xbox360 - you only have 7GB and you can check the space used by 1st/2nd gen Xbox360 games right now to extrapolate (or previous platforms if you dare).

But that's neither here nor there - people have agreed to disagree until further notice.

Actually,

Xbox 360 293,774
PlayStation 3 243,554

i don't see much differences in these sails figures. Considerung the PS3 has got "0" (zero) new games in january and the software supply is still not very good it's quite good to sell almost as many as 360s were sold which is

1) already established much longer,
2) a lot cheaper,
3) and got its best games up to now out in the same timespan.

Definately not a reason for some fbs here to jump around in circles (still funny to read though ;) )...

These numbers make zero sense. If Sony shipped 1 million by the end of the year, how the heck did they not sell out by now? Where are all these ps3's hiding??;)

You mean "Sell out by end Jan". And these numbers do make sense.

Shipping numbers (for anything) is always above demand to maintain supply-chain efficiency. Some of these PS3s are probably on the shelves of slower moving areas, while the best selling areas are stocked out. You also need to cater for some RMA units (lower than 5%).

Xbox 360 has matured enough for MS to introduce discounts/promotions to increase sales (Like the 199 offer someone posted here recently). So they will keep doing it to spike sales until it becomes "auto-pilot". PS3 is just fresh out of the oven, it will take them sometime to do that.

I'm glad we now have real numbers to play with. Will be great to see how the curve changes as companies continue to deliver (more games :) ) and tweak their strategies.

Wow, the 360 fan... enthusiasts are out in mass dancing on the would be grave of Sony.

Arrogance to humble-pie is a fantastic journey. All gamers will benefit from this adventure.

dvd9 is the name of the format. ;)

If I didn't have a Gamecube right now, I would totally buy a Wii. It's not like you can't play Tales of Symphonia or Fire Emblem while waiting for Metroid 3. But for me, Wii isn't something for me to buy until I've
a) Beat my Cube games
b) Metroid, Fire Emblem, and Battalion Wars have both come out and dropped in price. I ain't payin' no fitty dollars for no video games.

Anyway, looking at the total numbers of video game systems of any kind sold by company:

Nintendo: 888,000
Sony: 754,000
MS: 294,000

MS's X360 is doing well, but Nintendo and Sony have much broader product lines in the video game space.

So says a key cheerleader who is invested in only one next gen console (I won't say which). ;)

You know what I will benefit from? All consoles being a success, competition drives prices down and innovation forward. Some of you are so hoping for Sony to go bankrupt you forget they are the principle reason MS has pushed so hard in the console area. But if you guys like MS monopolies (Office, Windows) so be it.

Sony is arrogant, yet the bald 50 year old PR guy with the GTA4 tattoo appealing to the MTV crowd is "cool"?

Curious. Where did you get those numbers from?

5 weeks

Not to mention supply seemed to clear up pretty well by mid January only to appear sold out by February. Coincidentally, right after stories across the nation of ps3's sitting on the shelf.

Sony, what happened to, "we'll sell out the first 5 million without games."?

I figured Sony would have no problem selling ps3 to hardcore ps fans. That was never in question. I did not figure there would be so few though.

Sony arrogance seems to be a prerequisite for their executives across the board. In and of itself means little. However there is a saying:

You can talk the talk but do you walk the walk?

So says a key cheerleader who is invested in only one next gen console (I won't say which).

Key cheerleader? I admit, I do enjoy a good balancing just as much as the next guy.;)

btw what's your gamertag?

The physical format that you choose to name it hardly matters if the rest of the disc is locked out or unusable. No need to continue misinforming the public over a 20% decrease in space. Perhaps this requires another ethics thread.

It plays Tomb Raider Legend! :D
And Chibi Robo. And Pikmin 2 ...

You do have a point though. I think most of the Wii owners are just messing around with their daily Wii Sports routine. Nintendo is doing a good job making the system feel alive/useful with the weekly updates on the VC, daily news updates, and now every two or three days a new poll to vote on. It's silly, but it gives you a reason to turn the thing on regularly.

The Virtual Console keeps me busy (and happy) enough until Metroid and Smash Bros come out, but that strategy probably won't work for everyone.

I think there are ''plenty'' of Wii games to keep most people busy. I've got zelda, Red steel (wich is alot better than reviewers claim, they probably didnt spend more than 5 minutes on the game), Monkey ball and exite truck and all are pretty decent games. Ofcouse no triple A except for zelda but enough quility to not get you bored. And March also has some decent titels coming out so its not that there isnt anything decent available on Wii. The only problem is that most are just old games with new controlls trown in.

I would say doubling the price in 1 generation is arrogant as you can get. Competition has done nothing to keep prices down at sony land. The only way for prices to come down is sony to take a beating. Sony brought all this on themselves out of greed and arrogance. Saying things like the first 5 million would sell with no games or people will get a second job to get a PS3 are the most arrogant things ever said.

I would say the last decade has been pretty much a sony monopoly it is time someone else had a turn. All sony had to do was launch without blue ray and none of this would be happening. A 299-399 PS3 would of destroyed the 360.

Agreed - let's talk about those HDD nums too! :devilish:

On the other hand, >40mil have PS2. There is clearly an upgrade path there.

Just because people bought PS2@ $200 , doesnt automatically mean they will buy something thats 3 times more expensive, just because they have the same name. If it did, Nintendo would still be the king of gaming. (It might just get the throne back after this gen tho)

PS3 is not expensive, neither is Xbox 360. If PS3 costs $850 to produce, and they sell it at $600, should customer feel bad about being shorthanded? Thats pretty unrealistic there, as well as expectations of some wild price cuts, while both companies are losing money.

Its irrelevant what it costs to produce, if something costs 50% more than the competition its expensive, by definition.

In order for something to be expensive, it must cost more than whatever the price average of whatever your comparing it with. This is the console board, hence, a PS3 is expensive because it costs more than the x360 and wii. Wii, is cheap, because it costs below the average.

The PS3 is however a pretty cheap bluray player right now.

You are mixing things left and right.

VF5 is exclusive for 6 months. Thats pretty much same as exclusive.

No, it's not. The 6 month window is just that, 6 months. For someone who is an absolute fighting game whore who needs to have their fix now, it would probably make a difference. For most people who look at it and say they can have significantlly more games for a cheaper price, and only have to wait 6 months to get VF 5, it's worth it.

There is also big difference in multiplatform games - it is different when they are released for PS3, 6 months after 360 introduction, or at the same time. Only 4 million people in the USA have 360. That is pretty minor number. On the other hand, >40mil have PS2. There is clearly an upgrade path there.

Why is it clearly an upgrade path to go from a PS2 to a PS3? Most of the PS2 exclusives have gone multiplatform now. If someone wants to continue playing their PS2 games, they can keep the PS2 itself. Besides, it's not like being a PS2 owner automatically gives you some sort of discount when purchasing the PS3.

1) My husband and I make over $200k combined. For what we consider a videogame console to be worth, $600 is too damn expensive. As is $500 and $400. $300 is pretty much the upper limit to what we'll spend on a console.

It's too damn expensive.

2) No one told Sony to make a console that cost $850 to produce. I weep no tears for them.

3) If they want my money, they'll have to cut the price significantly and produce games that are worth it over a 360. Right now they have neither incentive, which is why they're seeing such paltry sales.

They can turn it around however, and I hope they do. Having a behemoth like Sony in the market helps immensely in maintaining interest in gaming. But right now, they're doing all the wrong things.
