FFXII goes platinum....

Even at 40 to 50 million thats still alot. Imagine how much FF XIII will cost on the PS3.

Hey guys would FFIII cost less than FF XII if they use real-time video instead of CGI?

Sure it's possible I guess, CG isn't exactly cheap. Wouldn't surprise me if CG was half their budget...

You'd think by the 13th iteration they do do away with the CG, especially since the PS3 and 360 can make impressive real-time visuals. That's why I like the SH3 and Metal Gear way of doing cut-scenes, all realtime!

I think that the FF series after FF7 made CGI a part of the game that they can't take out now. Today, people buying FF games expect luscious beautiful top of the range shiny CGI, and that's what they get.
With PS2 it was possible to start the FMV with no pauses or loading times, straight from gameplay, which integrated the CGI more than PS1 games, and i think as much as people bitch about it, FF games wouldn't be the same without their luxurious CGI.

Yea... I'm not a huge fan of CG, if only because I know it costs so much compared to what it really adds to the game. CG intro and endings to games are cool, but I don't need to see a CG segment every time I do anything or get to a new area in the game...

I suppose sooner or later they'll have to stop their CG whoring, but I think FF fans have come to expect it and wouldn't take the news of reduced CG well (at least some fans wouldn't).

OMG WTF?!? Are you freaking serious? That's crazy. I'm not expecting a FF XIII until the year 2009 now.

No, I expect the game to come around March 2008 in Japan if all things are going smoothly (not like FFXII). ;) I think It's reasonable. :)

Yeah I'm playing MGS3: Sub. now and I finally feel like some other guys here and I'm starting to dislike CGI in games. I hope FF XIII goes for little to no CGI too.

FF without CGI? Hahahaha. Not happening in this lifetime.

Nor should it.
What could you possibly gain with CGI in next-gen consoles? It's cheaper to just use the game models. The Final Fantasy games don't go for an uber-realistic style anyways.

In FF's case, the CGI cutscenes have always been absolutely stunning. If they used realtime graphics, you'd still get "useless cutscenes" (you can't control them , u just have to sit and watch), but without the eye-candy turned up to ridiculous levels, especially in the last 4 instalments.

If you're against un-playable cutscenes, that's fine, but to be honest, if i had to choose between sitting for a few seconds and watch "something" to convey the story, i'd watch a luscious CGI cutscene and not something that is limited to what the hardware can do. You still have to wait till they end, might as well look as something REALLY pretty.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't need cutscenes, but that's a completely different discussion.

What if you could get FF XIII a year earlier (ie Winter 2007 instead of Winter 2008) if they cut out the CGI cutscenes and made them using real-time assets. Would you possibly like that better?

What kind of example is that? It's not like FF games today come out late because of the CGI scenes!
They take ages to make and be released because they are absolutely immense games in terms of production values.
The CGI scenes are outsourced and really shouldn't slow the development of the game at all. Even if Square do their own CGI scenes, which is likely, they are done by separate studios to the ones working on the game. It's something separate.

Oh okay. I've always seen people complain saying that it's the CGI that's making the game come out later. I concede my arguement then.

I certainly wouldn't.

The CGI in the FF series has been getting so much better every time. It's a very big part of the game. It's there to tell the story so why not make it look as beautiful as possible?

The pre-rendered elements are a work of art, it just wouldn't feel the same if they missed them out.

Some of the scenes from FFX are stunning like Yuna walking on water. The Squall-Rinoa grad ball dance sequence was amazingly well done and it’s the single instance that got me hooked on FF CG having been ambivalent about it in VII.

I'm also not that bothered by the 3-4year waits for a new Final Fantasy (numbered). It'd be like you're over saturated with FF if they came every 1-2years IMO. The wait makes you crave it even more.

Okay, Okay!! You guys have convinced me. I was wrong. And a FF every 1.5 years would suck. Nobody wants a FF XXX in the year 2015.

If it is, then there's something going really wrong in those studios.
The games take ages to be made because the worlds are huge, the art resources for such huge worlds, with the quality Square wants, take ages to make, the voice overs and the music need to be made, and that quality of music isn't cheap or quick to make, the story needs to be perfected, the gameplay needs to be made and perfected, and it always changes from game to game if you haven't noticed, the game needs to be tested, and being such a huge game, the testing takes ages, then it needs to be balanced, and being so huge, it takes ages to balance it properly... And that's only in Japanese!!

There are so many things to do that a few seconds of CGI here and there, made simultaneously to the game development by other studios, really shouldn't slow anything down.

I don't want them to stop using CGI as long as realtime cutscenes can't show the same level of detail. They are starting to get closer and closer but it's still not the same. PS4 maybe?

Btw FFXII just hit the 2 million mark according to MediaCreate.

20-26 march

1. Final Fantasy XII - PS2 - 238.000 - (2.002.000)
2. Pokémon Ranger - NDS - 193.000 - (193.000)
3. Ace Combat Zero : The Belkan War - PS2 - 109.000 - (109.000)

Wow! Way to go Ace Combat. It's still kicking ass. And 2 million in two weeks in crazy for FF XII. Wouldn't that be around to $100,000,000?

total revenue yes, depending how much games cost in Japan. It's not profit.
