Since I don't see a thread on this title we might as well dump media and interviews here. Lionhead has a number of GDC events so there should be some interesting stuff to discuss. Some screenshots:

GamePro had an interesting comment on the animation system:

GamePro said:
Overall, the graphics in the ultra-early build looked impressive but clearly unfinished. The dog was the most graphically detailed object on display, and featured advanced fur simulation, interpolated animation (which made for highly realistic movements), and massive outdoor environments.

For being the first real stuff shown and being clearly test material, it looks good.

Waiting for Molyneux's presentation...

You have a dog. You have to have a dog. What if you don't even like dogs? :???: I hope to Betsy it's far better implemented than the Pets in B&W. Might be a nice idea (apart from alientating cynophobes) as long as it works well. Certainly novel. Advanced AI henchman and parties is something i'm looking forwards to in next-gen.

I'm really looking forward to this game. The one thing it absolutely needs is less restrictive movement. Fable 1 got me very near to turning my computer into an electronic pancake with all its impasseable 2 foot high fences (and despite that somehow remained a good game).

Molyneaux's dog simulator

GFX look a lot like fable 1. But then again, the GFX bar moves and you get accustomed to next gen gfx.

For example, Halo 2. People say Halo 3 looks just like Halo 2. Yet when I saw some real Halo 2 for PC screens yesterday, they look really bad and not near as good as Halo 3.

Looks nice for a first showing; it just feels like Albion. I was one of the few who'd stand around in a spot watching the day-night cycle and the shadows and sometimes lightning. :) I like the little bits of detail such as the flowers.

I am definitely looking forward to this, and I hope they make the world much more open so that you're not just walking along man-made paths. :p Can't wait to hear more.

I'm sure they'll have a cat up for microtransaction :p

:???:

Are they refering to animation blending? (tweening) or key framing?

Because both a not new and the realism of the animation is pretty much constrained entirely by the degree of artistic influence..

Perhaps they refer to something akin to the tech used in current basketball games?

Gee, great. How much use is a cat going to be!

"Help, I'm being attacked by a bear! Save me, my faithful puss!"
"Keep the noise down! I'm having a nap!"

How fitting would it be to have a lion in a Lionhead game? :p

While it's not new to use animals to drop the guard of the player in an attempt to make a stronger emotional connection,it's sounds like the implementation could be the deepest and most extensive yet.
I think it's a great idea. There's so much baggage associated with human to human relationships, that sometimes the only way to get through to someone is by the more pure and simple relationship between a human and an animal.
If I were doing it I might take an extra step to make the dog even more distinctive to try and make the bond even greater. Our appreciation of something or someone is not just about what they are in isolation since we don't live in a vaccum, but it's also what they are relative to everything else.
To that end I would make the dog ever so slightly more realistic. Nothing dramatic so it's obvious or even conscious, very subtle. Make the dog slightly brighter, animate a little more fluidly etc. Anything you can do to make the player feel that there is something a little more special about this creature and therefor create a stronger attachment.
Otherwise the dog could lost amongst a whole bunch of other interesting characters in the game world.

I never played Black and White all the way through, but one of the funniest gaming moments I've had was when I choose my pet/creature. The cow was jumping up and down trying to get me to pick him. I know I'm easily amused. :D

1up's feedback was reeking with antagonism. They could've raised the maturity level by calling Molyneux a butthead. IGN's and Gamespot's coverages, on the other hand, were much more positive. They were not blinded nor were they ignorant of the past. They were just much more positive than 1up's.

I don't like dogs in real life. I mean, I don't like anything about them. But Fable 2 has me intrigued. I see great potential for getting rid of standard, outside-the-game elements through the dog. I'm also very glad to read that it is a requirement that the dog never get in the way. I really, really hope they accomplish that. I was pretty underwhelmed when I first read that the secret was a dog, but reading through firsthand accounts has piqued my curiosity.

Now, I'm not expecting much yet. I learned my lesson from Fable 1. But they seem to be on the right track so far.

"I learned my lesson from Fable 1"

Haha, didn't we all. Molyneux flat out lied with regards to Fable 1. Fable was one of the most downgraded games, in all aspects; that I have ever seen. I actually think it takes the crown.

I really loved black & white , though I didnt finish it all the way through either. One of the more memorable games I played. I don't agree with the people (read: majority) who bashed it. It wasn't a perfect game, but I loved it, and so did my mom (which is a rarity).
