Ever been robbed?

I grew up in a bad neighbourhood where crime was an everyday thing, so I've encountered it a bunch of times during my upbringing.
Mostly from the perspective as the robber
It's really weird looking back at it.

You're female right?
So how the hell do you survive on a day to day basis where you live?

I heard the KKK abuse females.

I, being white, have never had any troubble where I live (been here my whole life... and it SUCKS), but I had a black friend whos car broke down in a little town about 15 miles west of the "city" (Ardmore is the so-called "city"- about 25k people, Wilson is the town- about 1.5k people which seems to be about 10-times too high) and the sun was going down, so he knew what he had to do. He hid in his trunk and used his cell phone to call his dad who had a tow truck bring the car back to Ardmore where it was safe for my friend to get out. I'm very glad that he was smart enough to hide in the trunk or else I'm positive that he wouldn't be around anymore, and not because he had done anything to piss off the people in Wilson because he's a really nice and easy to get along with kinda guy, but simply because if they see a black man out there, especially at night, they will take the opportunity. I'm even afraid to drive through there during daytime with my half-Mexican friend in the car, especially on Sundays because we have to drive past the church. Welcome to the south, where the KKK really IS still alive and you see people with rebel flags everywhere and it NEVER means simply "Southern Pride."

Wow, some very hardcore stuff here. Nothing quite that bad has ever happened to me, but my flatmate and his friend got caught in a gunfight in Jo'burg a few years back (not that uncommon in some areas).

My flatmate escaped unharmed but his friend was shot. Luckily the bullet didn't hit anything important so he recovered.

And DC, I would say that the vast majority of non-Americans understand that not all of the USA is gun crime ridden. Why would we?

sheesh :-/ makes my exp much liter :-O..

1.parents got burgled once,,, 99% chance it was one of the neighbouring flats,, but the cops claimed they couldnt just check each flat coz they didnt know which one ( couldnt be arsed more like).
2. bought a car after having worked for 10 yrs,, just got a cheapo 1.6 astra.. i couldnt start the bugger.. but the git's managed to nick it from the company car park ( in full view) with nobody noticing...... on a car worth just £1300 i end up about £500 down ( rip off insurance and loss of no-claims)

3. house burgled,, lost lots of stuff and insurance company changed the goalposts... it was a nightmare claiming :(
4. house burgled.. aaarrrghh , came home after a 14hr day at work,,, it's 12 at night,, pitch black,, can't open my yale lock..... i twig coz some fucker has 'put it on the snag'... i stayed at a mates house just in case they were home..
5. house burgled again,, the git waited till he expected i'd have got my insurance,, luckily i was lazier than he planned,,,, however he then smashed by burgler alarm up,, so when i get home the alarm box is still going and i've no way of turning it off... it sounded all folorn.......

so far been lucky,, no physical contact,, but it does change harshen ones attitudes .

-dave-

i now have bars on my windows, though the first time i got burgled they smashed my door in ..

Hey Nite_Hawk, what neighborhood do you live in?

I live in Seward right now, and lately there's been a rash of people busting into cars. I've probably seen close to a dozen within the past 3 or 4 months. My parents car was broken into about 5 months ago, (I was borrowing it to help move, (although actually ended up staying in the same building)). Other than that, there's been a couple robberies, and a couple murders in the neighborhood recently.

Heya clashman,

We live in prospect park, over by highway 280 and 94. It's really been pretty quiet around here so it came somewhat unexpectedly. I've heard about the rash of car breakins from a girl in one of my classes though. She lives over in the como area I believe and a lot of cars have been getting broken into over there too. Just last week her roommate's new civic was left on blocks in the street (atleast they were nice enough to leave it on blocks I guess).

We eventually say outloud that the backdoor to the house is right outside our room and to please leave. We wait for about another 5 minutes, and say "we're going to get up, go to the kitchen, and get a drink of water. We don't want to get hurt. Hopefully if anyone is still here they will use this as an opportunity to leave".

Sorry, but I have to say it. One word: Pussy's!!!

heh, you think I'm going to care that someone who calls himself "diarrhea_splatter" on the internet calls me a "pussy"? I'm trying to figure out if I should take this as a complement?

Anyway, things change when you get married. I don't really give a rats ass about the "stuff" we have, it's not really worth very much anyway. But do you think I would be so fucking stupid as to put my wife in danger simply so that I can look machismo for confronting the guy? Believe me, I have no fear that either my wife or I could take the guy if he was unarmed (she's a brown belt in Judo, and I've had some judo and other martial arts training as well). That's not going to help much if he's got a knife or a gun and reasonably trained in how to use it though. Neither pride, nor the trinkets you collect are worth your life nor the lives of your loved ones.

Nite_Hawk, sure no one was playing prank with you???

I'd love to think that, but unfortunately all my roommates were sleeping in their beds (one actually got hauled out to the police car in cufs because he slightly resembled the description of the guy who broke in before we could clear it up). I doubt it would have been someone from outside the house. Their style is more to reset all the clocks in your room or something, not break into your house at 5:30 in the morning.

Anyway, there are some pretty amazing stories here. Luckily I've never been in any crossfire from guns, nor have I ever been mugged. A lot of guys from the judo team I was on had some pretty frightening stories though. Crazy shit.

Forgot to mention,

Not exactly a robbery thing, but about a month and a half ago my girlfriend and I were seeing a play at the Mixed Blood theatre, (for Nite_Hawk, that's over by Cedar-Riverside). On our way back to her car after the play, we were walking through the ugliest apartment complex in the world, (I believe they are affectionatly called the "Crack Stacks"), when we see some kids in the distance playing soccer near where we we needed to go.

As we got closer, we noticed that what we were seeing was not a soccer game but rather a massive gangfight. Probably between 50 and 100 kids, mostly Somali and Ethiopian, were beating each other with sticks, whips, and chucking bricks. Thankfully, there were no guns. By the time we realized what was happening, cops had started to arrive near the street we were headed towards, driving the kids back in our direction. Since we knew turning around wasn't going to help, we decided to just walk right through the thing. I think the kids were probably wondering what the hell two white kids were doing walking through their fight, but were too occupied with watching out for themselves to really care all that much.

One word only, yet you screwed it up.
Unless of course you really intended to write it in genetive form ... but in that case you lack some context.

The irony of having an ESL (no offence Humus!) correct Mr. Splatter on his spelling and grammar is just really, really funny :)

Ugh, scary stuff. I'd be shit scared if someone even pointed a gun at me.

Worst I've had is that my bike was stolen from outside our flat.. And I saw it like a few weeks later on the same bike holders it was taken from.. The lock was sawed off. And before that I had already seen it in front of the store in town, checked to see if it really was my bike, told my mom to look at it too, we decided to leave it there, we had already gotten paid by the insurance company and gotten me a new bike, so it really wasn't worth troubling the police with, seemed to be in the hands of some kid, the seat was much lower than in my use.

I think that's it.. There's stabbings and stuff in this town, we live 30km from the Finnish-Swedish border so some drug traffic/dealing here. But I've never had to deal with it.Safe country and town to live, this place.. Under 25k people living here, backwoods :D

If you don't count the many times someone has threatened to beat the crap out of me because I have long hair (yes, the people here really are that ----ing idiotic) and the one time I actually did get punched.. But that seems kinda trivial now, after reading those stories...

Seriously? I would kinda expect people to be fairly comfortable with long-haired men in these areas. Which town btw?

Wow...some pretty scary experiances in these posts.
ive only ever had one similar experiance myself.
My younger sister and I (she 14 and me 18 at the time) were walking back to the train station after seeing a movie. It was mid afternoon on a pretty sunny day and we were walking along the sidepath in the suburban street behind the shopping complex that housed the cinema.
This sports hatchback pulls up and this...well, australians would identify with them as wog boys..pulled up beside us. For those who dont get me, i mean an ethnic young guy (greek or italian) loves to "hot up" his crappy little hatchback and gets around in shiny "street ware" crap.
Anyway i was on my guard as soon as he pulled over but i consider myself a decent guy and Perth isnt that bad a spot in regards to crime so when he produced a street map and asked for directions to get to a shopping center a little further away i let myself relax a bit. He was pretty laid back...did a good job of sounding like he had no idea where he was, forgot to put his hand break on and laughed congienially while he reached in and pulled it on.
Anyway after a few minutes of me unsuccesfully trying to help him (i had just got my licence and lived about 40km north of there anyway) he put down the map and camly told me he knew excatly where he was and could i please hand over all my money, my mobile phone, my cards and accompyning pin numbers.
Well after a few seconds shocked silence i said "What?". He repeated himself and my sister started to cry. He said to me that he wouldnt hurt her but just to give him all i had, i had nothing. All my meagre amount was spent at the movies, i didnt have a mobile phone at that stage, and my card was left at home because i didnt need it that day.
What he did take was my student concession card with my (thankfully false) address on it, warning me that if he ever heard anything from me he would know where to find me. He then jumped in his car and pissed off. I got his number plate, reported the incident to the police and they picked him up charging him with my mugging and a number of other offences. He had his day in court and was sent to jail!
happy days. 8)
I was really scared for my sister however, that was the worst part of it. No-one makes my little sister cry and gets away with it and i beat myself up over not thumping the shit out of the little greaseball in the following months...Im glad i didnt now however, i dont think he had a weapon but im not sure entirely. Seeing as he got jack shit out of me bar a concession card and a jail term discression was the better part of valour in that intance.

This would be in Kemi, Lapland. And from my experience people in the southern regions are more comfortable with long-haired men. Atleast from my visits (and four month job-experience tour) at Seinäjoki I've had no bad experiences despite walking around in town at night time.. Here I get loads of evil looks and sometimes even shouts (from a distance naturally :D)... Backwards country...

Kemi, that's not that far from where I am. Given the amount of metal musicians in Finland I thought they would be comfortable with long-hair men 8) (maybe they are all from the south?)
