Locking the door achieves a purpose. Most thieves are opportunistic. Pirating games is a completely different scenario. It is easier to download a game than it is to find a disc and copy it from a friend, so I don't think the burglar analogy really works.
'Sending out a message' by making your game more painful to use by the existing customer base is hardly a good reason. The only message getting sent there is that if you want hassle free gaming, then dont pay!
