E3: Xbox Live Upgrade and other add-ons

All,

Just got a Reuters story linked at the bottom that talks about Microsoft announcing at E3 some new upgrades and add-ons for the Xbox. Looks like they're adding a few features I was looking for in Xbox Next...

As game makers prepare for the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, the year's largest video game show, Microsoft is readying a new version of Xbox Live with advanced community features such as voice chat and locater services that operate independently of games in progress...

and...

After the upgrades, the sources said, players will be able to turn on their Xboxes, see who among their friends is online, and engage them in voice chats in community settings that do not even require a game to be inside the console.

Other add-ons coming soon to the console include the ability to use the Xbox as a sort of media center, to listen to digital music and watch videos in their living rooms.

and finally...

The upcoming upgrade will have a new feature tentatively dubbed "Xbox Music Mixer." It allows users to pull the music files off their computers and onto the Xbox's 8-gigabyte hard drive, then use the Xbox as a media center with on-screen displays and auto-identification of songs, sources said.

With the new upgrade, Xbox users would also be able to transfer properly encoded video from their personal computers to the Xbox and view that video on a television screen.

What do you think? I like it. I'm just wondering the cost will be and when it will be ready.

Edit: Oops forgot to link the article...

The RIAA and MPAA would have their heads.

Hehehe... not MS's. :) I'd LOVE to see either of those two try to beat MS in a lawsuit.

Wow, actually that's a REALLY tough call. Hmm. Would it be the end of music and movies as we know them, or would MS just settle with another really big 'bribe'?

This is from the latest OXM;

WHAT YOU GET:

Price: $39.99

Xbox Music Mixer CD (with 12 karaoke songs, downloadable upgrades to the music manager, and all the trimmings mentioned in this article)

1 consumer grade Karaoke microphone

1 1/4 inch to Xbox controller port connector

General info:
Developer: Wild Tangent
Publisher: Microsoft
Release Date: September 2003

KARAOKE

What it is: For the American Idol wannabes of the world, Xbox Music Mixer packs a powerful singing punch. You can test out your vocal stylings on any of the 12 included songs (with lyrics onscreen) or you can use the digital vocal-stripping technology and remove the lyrics from your favorite CD, MP3, or WMA and then cut your own vocal rendition. And you can record them on your Xbox, bring to a friend's house, and horrify them with your haunting melodies.

Coolest use: You could record yourself singing over your favorite songs and then you could listen to your greatest hits while racing down the street in your snazzy Corvette in Project Gotham Racing (or any game that supports custom soundtracks).

Scariest use: Have you ever heard yourself sing? Probably isn't a pretty thing.

MANAGE YOUR MUSIC

What it is: Essentially, Music Mixer gives you a huge upgrade on all of your audio functionality. First off, it gives you access to a database of songs so that every time you pop a CD into your Xbox it'll display the artist, length of song, and song title. You can alter any CD, MP3, or WMA with effects like flange, distortion, chorus, etc. And you can continually update the database and even add new effects through Xbox Live.

Coolest use: This alone will save you hours of typing in song names when making soundtracks. Plus you can now create transitions from song to song.

Scariest use: Now you can't hide what music you ripped to your Xbox... people will now know that "m2" was just a codename for Michael Jackson's Thriller. Shame on you!

LIVE ON YOUR PC

What it is: Music Mixer allows you to connect your Xbox to your PC so you can easily transfer all of your MP3s (legal ones we assume... right?) and WMAs to your Xbox. Finally, a way to get that huge MP3 collection straight to your Xbox. Plus the product is Live-enabled and will give you access to tons of songs, visualizers, and even all-new karaoke tracks. They have yet to reveal how much of this stuff will be free to Live users and how much of it will require additional fees.

Coolest use: Finally, an easy way to play MP3s through your booming home stereo. No need to burn CDs that only work occasionally.

Scariest use: Now that your wife/girlfriend has a reason to use your Xbox, it might cut down on game time. Ah well, it's a good excuse to buy two of 'em

DANCE, DANCE EVOLUTION

What it is: Your Xbox comes with one standard 2D "visualizer" (the light show that happens when you play audio on Xbox) this product gives you another 10 to switch between and 10 3D visualizers (3D scenes that include up to eight characters who actually dance to YOUR music and can be customized by you). Even better, you can edit the visualizers, place in your own photos (see photo album), put in a series of audio and video effects, and essentially make your own music video.

Coolest use: This thing is easily powerful enough to do your own VJ-ing at raves. So you can make some bucks with your Xbox.

Scariest use: Mike Salmon and his wife singing "I Got you Babe" while a video wall presents touching photos of their daughter Ava... then we put it on the disc to torture the rest of you with its sappiness.

PICTURE THIS

What it is: An enhanced photo viewer that allows you to download photos to the hard-drive and create stunning slide shows that you can show on your big-screen TV, rather than that dinky computer monitor. It also allows you to use customized soundtracks, visual effects, captions, narratives, and voice-overs. And you can use these slideshows on a video screen within one of the 3d visualizers. Just another great use that simply isn't possible on any other system. With Xbox Music Mixer the Xbox is quickly becoming the epicenter of your entertainment center.

Coolest use: Jazzing up your business presentation with some gangsta rap and an Xbox.

Scariest use: Just don't let Gary Glitter or Pete Townsend near this thing...

Interesting.. MS gets HUUUUUGGGGEEEE points for supporting MP3, instead of just WMA. Massive, infact. While its not exactly a stone throw away, perhaps we'll see an official MPEG/DIVX player? :p

Its a shame you can't actually stream the files, but this is still pretty spiffy.

Cool new features.
But I can imagine the relatively puny 8 gig hard drive to fill up quite rapidly.
It's clear that MS didn't have these features in mind, when designing the xbox.
Especially the connectivity to PC seems as an afterthought. Can you upload files back to PC too? Then you PC's hard drive would act as an extension to xbox's storage capacity.

Thats true! I already have 6 GBs of English/Hindi mp3s when there are hundreds more to be added/////

btw next 10 yrs look interesting.....can PS3/XB2 hope to replace PCs in many households....basically if just wish to browse web/watch movies/download stuff/listen mp3/send email/chatting/webcam etc you could just buy a PS3/XB2.....instead of a PC....

but I would like to have these features as secondary options....gaming should be promoted as the main feature....

As I predicted the Xbox is being turned into a set-top box within two years of its release. You think it's gonna end here? Think again.

Dural,

Thanks for the post! I don't have a subscription to OXM and my local Blockbuster hasn't received the new issue yet. So it was nice to be able to see the article before I could get the issue.

This new add-on sounds great! I'll probably purchase it when it comes out. I'm also thinking of getting the new Xbox Live Starter Kit even though I don't have my own broadband access. I can always use on my dad's cable modem when I visit him. However, it all depends on whether or not it includes the new Xbox Live upgrades. Plus, my wife would love to have the Tetris game. :)

BTW, I received my free Xbox USB keyboard adapter today. Wow is it small. I'm at work right now. So I haven't been able to plug it into my controller, but it looks shorter than a memory card. I don't own Phantasy Star Online (PSO), but figured I could possibly use it somehow. Plus, it only cost $7 for shipping. :)

Now I wonder if Microsoft is going to release a portable MP3/WMA player?Or at least provide some way in the Music Mixer to download your music straight to a portable MP3/WMA player without using a PC?

Does anyone know if this upgrade lets you play CDRs with MP3s? :?

Nope, afaik the Xbox DVD drive just plain doesn't read CDRs... hence the networking option (but CD-RWs with MP3s work).
