If anything was show of Mario kart from e3 last year, it would have been the game rare was working on. There's also been lot's of rumors of mario kart online, but from what nintendo has recently said, that's not going to happen.

Quincy: EAD is working on Mario Kart, last I checked.. and sadly you're right. It looks like Mario Kart might not be online.

Damnit, Nintendo, you'd better have online Mario something by Summer 2004 or I'll be very pissed!

Online Mario Kart, Party, or even Golf/Tennis would be astoundingly addictive..

Er... yeah, that stuff's been known for like a year and a half now.

Except the price, which is over $100 AFAIK...

IMO John Carmack is highly overrated....same for DOOM3....I dont understand why is it being made out as game of the century...it is just Silent Hill 2/3 with FPView with some pretty graphics....! What unique is it going to offer??

Dude if u want to play that game we can say silent hill 2/3 is just res evil with some pretty graphics . We can then say res evil is alone in the dark with just pretty graphics. We can go all the way back to pong if u really want too . Carmack is a big deal because he makes some of the best looking games on the pc .

Why is there any reason to believe Carmack makes the best looking PC titles? Do you know that for sure? Maybe some less popular PC developer will show Carmack a thing or two in the future, so why make a big deal out of it? Maybe Carmack will decide to turn hippie and forget about spending anymore time working on games for a living and become a groupie who tours with a local band. Maybe, just maybe, I'm being too pessimistic towards one specific product/company.....but hey, aren't we all?

Well all we can base it on is the present and the past. And so far he has made some of the most brilliant games on the pc. I should say most brilliant engines on the pc. I think we can all agree with that .

Doom III, overrated? It's not even out yet. It has been very hyped though. Why? Well, look at id's track record. They're one of the most consistent developers around.. with several timeless, revolutionary classics under their belt.

John Carmack was once a prodigy in the field of game programming.. now he's considered a master of game engines.

Doom III may or may not be a revolutionary classic.. but chances are that it won't disappoint. Get over it.

THAT is why Carmack is so famous.

DOOM was mind-boggling when it was released - it severely bitch-slapped every other 3D game out at the time, and ran full speed on weaker systems, no less.

Quake was built on the first commercial, fully-3D game engine.

All of Carmack's engines are known for being shockingly efficient at putting out great visuals. The man really knows how to code, despite idSoftware itself not having the most talented artists or game designers (think of the game Quake3:Arena as a tech demo, with the real games being Voyager:Elite Force, RtCW, and JK2).

Tag: Aye.

I still think that Q3 is arguably the most fun multiplayer FPS around (due to uh, user mods) but for the most part you're right.

Carmack (if he didn't single-handedly do it) was one of the few developers who really opened the door for 3D gaming as a whole. He was also a big advocate of hardware acceleration when it was a big question mark back in 1996-1997.

If J.C. wasn't around, who knows how far this industry would be on the graphical end of things? Monumental hits like Half-Life and GoldenEye 007 probably wouldn't exist as we know them if id Software hadn't released Wolf3D/Doom/Quake! So cut id some slack! Doom III (after 4 years of development/polish) is poised to be a great game.. nevermind great looking. :)

I think Croteam are highly underated for their SS Engine...

Serious Engine is very powerful as well, but in different ways.

Its main draw is that it's VERY efficient at mind-blowing draw distances combined with ludicrous quantities of enemies - all running toward one single point :devilish: .

Also it has the stunningly fun gravity source modification ^_^

This thread is determined to stay off-topic. First it was reviews, now it's 3D engines! ;)

Here are a few interesting games to be announced at E3 for the PS2.

Archangle (Working Title) - Criterion - Sony (Publisher)
Everquest RPG (Offline) - Snowblind Studios - Sony (Publisher)
Untitled Multiplayer Game (Kart Game?) - Free Radical Design - Sony(Publisher)
Rollcage Update - Attention To Detail - Sony (Publisher)
