can someone advise if entering into your old work e-mail is a crime. how about entering into others accounts from the old job. a common password was issued and used.

Depends what country you are in, but generally, yes. It's considered "unauthorised access to a computer system", and in most places would be considered a criminal offence. Sure, it's dumb of them to issue a generic login/password and not change it when people leave, but you know you're not supposed to be accessing it now you've left the company. You might also be guilty of an illegal communications intercept, as a lot of phone tapping laws have been updated to take into account newer forms of communications.
