Heh, not like you couldn't make your own "games" selection anyway with current versions of Windows. I always have.

Yeah, but the whole point is to make it easier for everyone. Not only us, but for the guy who's always used consoles his whole life to play games.

Hopefully VIsta will help bring more games to the Windows platform. I'm personally getting bored with the lack of quality games. The only real saving grace for me right now with PC's as far as gaming is the fact that I have total control, and the amazing number of quality mods that come out for games like HL2 and UT2k4.

Well, "hard" included creating the folder and dragging and dropping game shortcuts from other parts of the menu to that folder. But I suppose it's nice that Microsoft seems to finally be acknowledging games as being an important use of Windows.

Well, the actual number of well-reviewed games isn't all that dissimilar in Windows as it is in consoles.

Apart from the fancy look is there any other reason to change to Vista? I can't see any new tech or ideas...

64 bit support out of the box so over 2gig mem support with out tweaking if you care. WGF is going to be Vista exclusive, XP will get hit with two more updates of DX then shut down to promote Vista switching. Thats a rumor so far as it will upset many people.

Other then that, hey, its windows with a new look and improved load times full of customizations, it WILL catch on eventually.

I know people dread the day they have to update an OS but i personally dont mind. If its a good launch i welcome it. Win XP64 has really showed me some noticable benefit in load times for just about all programs including the OS itself, if the trend carries over to Vista, awesome.

Oh....and there will be a RSOD now to go with the BSOD (yes, Red Screen Of Death)

I assume that DX10 / WGF2.0 that ships with Windows Vista has
Shader Model 4.0 (which was renamed WGF2.0 iirc). is that right?

I also assume there will be ATI and Nvidia GPUs released before-hand that support WGF2.0 .... the NV5x (G80?) and R600.

Even with some give and take on the final functionality, if Windows Vista is now scheduled to appear with DirectX 10 out of the box we could suggest that this may be indicative of the timescales the IHV’s are planning their DirectX 10 architectures for so there will need to be time with both hardware and the API for it to be fully tested and realised prior to the release of the OS.

In due time compatibility and support.

Nice to know that it'll ship with Vista, which is looking more and more like a fine gaming platform.

I'm not so sure if I'm that happy after all, that WGF2.0 will appear so soon. I'd want to know if and what has been removed/reduced exactly, before I make up my mind. If it wouldn't be an API that is aimed to last at least as long as DX9.0 (4-5 years), it wouldn't even be an issue.

and the r520/580 ? :?:

This year's end most likely for the latter along with NV's 90nm NV4x variant.

Fair enough. I'm assuming that the team has had enough time to implement (nearly) all of the discussed feature set by now.

There's also the possibility of a later on update that might enable some functionalities; that's not a problem at all, as long as it's all going to be in there.

64 bit? So all those Sonoma laptops won't be usuable with Vista?

I'd assume they'll have both a 32bit and 64bit version of Vista.

You are correct; but there will be one version, user will be able to select which one to install (x32 or x64) at the beginning.

I'm surprised that Jo Blow would be able to select(x32 or x64).
Wouldn't setup just detect what CPU you have and install the appropriate version unless you force a particular type with unattended.txt,winbom.ini, etc.

I imagine a simple "Would you like to enable the x64bit extensions of your processor" question should do :p I am not sure how they'll implement it; we'll see as the beta program progresses.
