DS Enhanced?

Disclaimer: This thread is purely speculative in nature! Any resemblence to actual facts and plans are completely and totally made-up!

We all know that Nintendo loves to release incremental upgrades to it's handheld line, because it gets everyone to re-buy the same hardware and makes them a bunch of money. So I got to thinking, what will the DS's first upgrade be?

My personal prediction would be that in about a year or so we'll see a DS released with bilinear or trilinear filtering and a compact flash or SD card slot, which will allow you to play movies and/or MP3's on your DS. Maybe they'll call it "DS Enhanced" or "DSX" or something like that.

My question is, how do you think such a system would be able to hold out against PSP, assuming they released it at around 130 or 140 and dropped the "regular DS" down to 100? Or do you think they'd do something different, or not at all? This thread is just idle speculation because I'm bored, but I'm curious as to what you all think.

there wont be another upgrade to the ds . There doesn't need to be one . They will put out a new gameboy . NOt another ds .

Most likely a gameboy 2 with graphics on the gamecubes lvls so we get gamecube ports

in 2009 i believe.

:p
na prob in 2007

give the ds 2 years . By then they should be able to put out a gamecube lvl graphics device that get good battery life and it would have given enough time for the games from the start of the gamecubes life to be old enough that people will want to play them again .

I wouldn't be too surprised if they eventually released some sort of repackaged DS hardware.

Interpolation/trilinear filtering though.. hmm. A neat idea, but I'm not sure if it's quite as easy as applying interpolation in a SNES emulator. It probably is, but if they're going to upgrade the system I doubt they'll give it just enough horsepower to do filtering.

It'd be more worth it to make it more of a Dreamcast than an N64, and that's what the GBA2 is for.

GB could get away with such upgrades due to the neglible competition it had in its market, IMO. Developers had no option than to jump to the next slight upgrade if they wanted to stay in the handheld business.

So...unless DS becomes such a huge dominant force, I don´t think we´ll see an updated DS in a good while.

Oh, I have a question for the people with contacts in the industry: how´s GBA development going on? I remember hearing somewhere that it was dreceasing quite a bit, is this just a rumor? Because if not, it´d make my DS=next gen GB prediction true. ;)

Hey, they added to the DS R&D a good deal, so it's got to be going SOMEwhere. ;)

They'll certainly come out with a new version of the DS at some point, but I imagine it will be after the GBA2 hits the streets. They'll have new ways to reduce the cost, spruce up the packaging, and roll in desired other desired changes and features that they want to push at that point forward.

Speculating on a new model now is pretty pointless.

if they make a repackaged DS (like the sp) it wont add any new hardware features (like filtering). it'll probly just be made smaller and sleeker, and maybe add a few features like the ability to map x and y to r and l for gba games. and it might come with a screen protector or 2 for the touchscreen.

If they are successful in making DS their third pillar, expect upgrade in the future, just how we expect update for GB. If it fails, then I'll agree with you, they'll just make DS disappear like VB.

Seems to be a success right now. I wouldn't worry about an upgrade or a better version until the new Gameboy comes out. That is of course unless the DS is the Gameboy and Nintendo lied to everyone. As far as I'm concerned the DS is still experimental and a big risk for Nintendo, but definitely a risk that has been well worth it already.

I am wondering how well Sony will succeed in supporting three platforms at the same time.

PlayStation 2
PlayStation Portable
PlayStation 3

Im guessing support for PS2 will be faded out while support for PS3 will grow. In the end they don't need to "support" PS2, apart from keeping a steady flow of decent games, until PS3 picks up the pace. Like PS1 did. They didn't abandon it overnight, support just slowly shifted towards PS3.

Yes, but they will have to support three platforms at the same time for a while. ;)

Nintendo and Microsoft won't give them time to catch their breaths if they would want to do that...
