Domain purchasing & hosting recommendations

This one is actually for my father who is the IT manager for the Liverpool Medical Institute in the UK. He left a nice little query for me on my answer machine:

"Where would you recommend to buy a domain, maybe host it too. Not necessarily the cheapest or the best outright, but a good one nevertheless."

Unfortunately that was it and he's way walking, so I can't ask him anymore details. I suspect that the domain will be the LMI and not for himself (I doubt he would ask me if was a case for the latter). The Institute is kind of library for Merseyside and further; it hosts lectures and such like, as well as being a source of obscure periodicals and written material for medical folks.

Since I cannot get any more detail out of him at the moment, I think all I can ask for is general recommendations for companies that are (a) trustworthy/reliable, (b) offer good support, (c) reasonable packages and (d) sound really good so that I appear as a genius!

Thanks in advance.

1and1 just ended a offer for three years free of 500meg 5gigs a month service, I picked it up and its working very well :) Extremely fast, and very easy to use.

We like www.godaddy.com for domain registration. If you don't need Frontpage extensions (a bit iffy hit 'n miss compatibility) or high monthly bandwidth it is also good for hosting. They have webmail too.

If you don't need Frontpage extensions (ditto, only worse), than www.fatcow.com is pretty decent basic hosting at a cheap price, with more disk space and monthly bandwidth than godaddy. They also have spam filtering and webmail.

If you *do* want rock-solid Frontpage compatibility, then www.myhosting.com are the folks for you. They are on MS short list of approved Frontpage hosting partners, and our own experiences prove it. They have webmail and spam filtering (tho not as effective as fatcow, from what I've seen so far).

OTOH, if hosting large-scale forums are your thing, what I have heard is that you'd be looking at a whole different set of hosters, which I can't comment on from personal experience.

Best. Geo (who co-owns a dozen or so domains and is co-responsible for hosting four of them, and have used all three services after researching the options relatively recently).

I like mysitespace.com Granted i suck with html and phpbb . But so far for the little i know they have been extremly helpfull and its only 4.44 a month for thier lowest hosting .

I've been "using" powweb.com, and am very satsified.

Of course, considering how often I update my home page, "using" may be a bit too strong a term. ;)

dont purchase names from verisign (network solutions).
we made that mistake, and every time we try and change even our dns servers it fucks up. total nightware, stay far far away.
