Does Sony have a plan B???

I know it's just pure speculation, but after reading what I just posted in the PS3 thread, what can Sony do if Cell is not ready to go into PS3, what could Sony put in the PS3 in time in order to be able to compete with Xbox2 and GC2???

maybe go the xbox way.
of the shelf components? but i don't think they will try to rape themselfes.
better wait 1+ year then call a plan B i think

Cell will be ready. it is slated to go into production in mid 2004. if there is a delay for any reason, Sony should simply take the needed months to get Cell ready. a 6-12 month delay would not kill Sony by any means. they should not go to a plan B unless Cell is a complete disaster.

I know, I know... we all want Cell to be ready in time. Maybe I just didn't express myself clearly enough, what I meant is what else could they do IF Cell wasn´t ready. I'm just talking about one of this What if? scenerios (sp?), like the one about if Xbox was to be launched at the same time of PS2, it would have a ..., you know waaay better than me.

Thank you anyway

Volando voy,
volando vengo...

GOING THE XBOX WAY is absolutely ridiculous.... with the amount of money and resurces put into PS3 and Cell, do u really think they would just turn around and built another architecture just because Cell isnt ready?

i can't even begin to imagine how someone could think such a thing...

Ps3 will come out WITH Cell WHEN cell is ready. simple as that...

there WILL be initial shortages just like there were with PS2, but they'll get over it eventually, just like PS2.

Cell is the new generation of *EVERYTHING WITH SONY NAME ON IT* and PS3 will be the new generation of *THE THING SONY IS KNOWN FOR TO 90% OF THE POPULATION*... how anyone can think that the 2 wont be together after all is completely beyond me....

oh, and i'm not even getting into the whole *IT'S BEEN CONFIRMED BY SONY* argument...

Seems I didn't make myself clear enough the second time either.

I'm just asking for a What if ¡¡¡¡ What if Sony wasn't able to release PS3 soon enough due to problems with Cell, problems bad enough to let their competition a one year headstart?. Do you think they would be able to recover from it? Is Sony's power strong enough to keep average Joe from Xbox2 and GC, doing a dreamcast to them?

Saludos

Sony has a plan B, C, D, and E just the same as Microsoft and Nintendo. Large multi-national companies just don't put all their eggs in one basket. Also they don't reveal all their ideas way ahead of time. Speculation is fun, but it shouldn't be taken as fact.

well what i think is that releasing an early ps3 with off the shelf parts would be very stupid...

not only because it would be very underpowered compared to a cell-powered machine released at the same time, but also because (MOST IMPORTAN OF ALL) the whole Cell compatibility with every other cell-powered Sony electronic machine would go to hell. and thats the big thing about it.

delay is the only option methinks...

megateto: don't bother man, there is no such thing as PLAN B

SONY knows only 1 letter. and that's A ! you , the first letter in the alfabet
(in most alfabets that is. .. .)

There won't be a plan B. No one (MS/N) is going to launch a year early (say, 2005 compared to sony 2006ish, if Cell is delayed) and risk a DC repeat, that is, being killed by hype. Also, MS/N would be more than happy to wait until PS3 is ready and reap higher revenues. No one wants their system to be tagged with a 4 year lifespan anyways (XB/GC).

The next gen will start when Sony launches PS3, and MS/N will hold back/wait until the time has come.

WELL whatever happens, with the money being thown around and the sheer determination of MS and N to take Sony down, it's going to be

If you want to play "what if's" we can do it all day megateto.

What if Nvidia and ATI tell MS to step off at the basis of their GPU being in xbox2?

What if ATI backs out of the gamecube2 contract?

What if Nintendo has a disaster and is unable to fund a new console?

What if MS simply drops out of the console race?

Like I said, you can play what if's all day. Any person who writes a "news" article on the fact that Cell will not be in PS3 on time is either a moron or bias.

What's more, the people writing these articles(designchain, theinquirer) fail to look at the solid facts but continue to post this garbage rhetoric and people continue to buy it.

I guess they didn't see that the new Toshiba Oita 65nm fab is going into mass production early 2004 huh? Or maybe they didn't want to see it but continue to post up BS based on nothing but garbage that has no fact behind it, only speculation. Which without a doubt, the Xbox fanboys cling on to.

Truely sad.

I think some people should re-read the topics title again.

Paul:

No one wants your "what-if" Nvidia this, Microsoft that. He wants some opinions on what people think would be Sony's option IF CELL IS NOT READY. How much we believe that CELL will be there is not relevant and not of interest. This thread is clearly here to discuss Sony's possible alternatives. No doubt, CELL is important and Sony the company dedicated enough to pull it through, however, that does not mean that CELL will be there in the end. God knows what problems Sony could be facing right this moment. What if they realize that CELL doesn't fit into PS3's concept? What if they realise that there might be better, cheaper hardware out at the time for a game console? There are many problems Sony may be facing - now, I do not believe that such problems will hinder Sony in any big way, but as long as there's no PS3 with CELL on the market available - we can not know if it will be there or not.

So, I ask - what are Sony's alternatives if CELL for some reason can't be used? What would be Sony's situation, what could they do?

And your point to this ramble is?

Like I said, you can play what if's ALL DAY. Please.. don't waste our time with this one. So at the end of the day, I Guess the billions of dollars that are being spent on the Cell fab's will turn into nothing. And I also guess SCEI was lying when they said Cell would be in PS3.

Plan B-

I'd think plan B could be a shrunken combined Emotion Engine and GS engine at .65nm. Increase the raw power of it by 10 folds with more transistors and put some kind of pixel and vertex shading in at the hardware level.

Or Plan C -

The PSX to be released ensure increase the power of it by including a more powerful chip, instead of just the combined EE+GS engine, put in some new features like VS and PS with 2-5times the power of the current PS2.Put a slightly more powerful CPU in a lot more memory, a slightly larger cache. Then reduce the price from $400+ dollars after 6 months to $300 and sell it as a loss for 2 years until cell is ready 2006-7. Developers can create some pretty impressive stuff for 2 yrs with an already mature library.

Speng.

Megato's 'what if' scenario is not too farfetched unlike the one that you created. There's no guarantee that CELL wouldn't be delayed.

But yet there is no evidence to support that.. It's like saying ATI will drop the Nintendo contract.

Possible? yes, ANYTHING is possible but it's just insane. All evidence points to Cell being there in 2005 that's what I'm getting at, there is no evidence to support otherwise.

There's no guarantee that CELL wouldn't be delayed.

And there is no guarantee that ATI or Nvidia wouldn't say to MS "scram"

And there is no guarantee that Nintendo or MS couldn't just drop out of the console war.

If you are going to say that Cell could very well be delayed, there is no reason not to say what I said above correct? But oh no your highness, you deem my words "imposible" well I say the same with yours.
