Displacement Mapping?

Sorry to bring back this story one more time. Now that we have the different answers from the different chip makers, can someone summurize the difference between the technics used by Ati, Matrox and Nvidia?

As i understand it, Ati's and Nvidia's solution are quite similar and Matrox use a different one. Right? :?:

Matrox = real
The rest = fake

Pretty much sums it up :)

I think this would more accurately be stated as:

Matrox = Full hardware DM (but currently not enabled in their drivers)
ATI = Hardware-assisted DM
Nvidia = Hardware-assisted DM (but no product available to try it on yet)

Well, my point being that only the Matrox method is worth its name IMO. The other methods of doing displacement mapping in Direct3D were probably added after pressure from ATi and nVidia in order for them to be able to state they have displacement mapping support. They are pretty useless.

does dm have a future. any future cards going to support it in hardware.

later,

Yes via VS3.0. Most probably all next generation cards will have those if not a bit higher.
