Directx 9 this year ?

There seems to be a lot of confusion on whether Directx 9 will be released or not,but after looking at this site it seems that it will make a debut & quite possibly soon I dare say.

The DX 9 beta hasn't started yet. It's supposed to start "May-ish", according to Phil Taylor, who's the Microsoft DirectX Product Manager.

Given that, I would think that by the end of June we should have a pretty good indication of whether or not DX9 is going to ship this year.

This link is suggesting the same thing, DX 9 is Beta testing now.

"Microsoft needs some beta testers for the future DirectX 9.
If you want to participate to the Beta Test Program, just follow these instructions and you might have the chance to get into the Beta test program.

The User ID and the Password works. ;-)

Actually, the link is not suggesting it's in beta right now. The link suggests that they are accepting APPLICANTS for the beta testing program, not that actual beta testing is going on.

The info given in the previous link that I posted seem to have some truth to it because Tom's Hardware seems to have more info concerning Directx 9:

"DirectX9 will go live in Q3 of this year, and DirectX9.1 in March, 2003. Delivery of Longhorn is probably going to impact what goes in DX9.1, but DX9 is definitely targeted at this Christmas' games.

DX9 will have improvements that will allow better optimizations and clearer controls within the vertex and pixel shader. DX9 doesn't look like it's going to have an advertising campaign to promote it, because it is very much an evolution designed for developers that struggled with programmable shaders first time around, and features that didn't quite deliver on their promise. It isn't a dramatic change from DX8.x.

It also doesn't look like it is going to require major driver modifications for the hardware guys either, although it does leave room for hardware improvements in next generation chips in stenciling, anti-aliasing, and texture handling. "

This is really good news so we can expect the R300,Parhelia & maybe the NV-30 but I 'm not sure if it is Directx 9.1 compliant which would make its debut next year instead.
