dang. there was a post about ATI GPU for Rev that's gone now

I few days ago, I swear I remember reading a post (not a thread just a post) about the ATI-Nintendo Hollywood. the GPU for Revolution. here's what I can rememeber from that post

*the two developments teams doing Xenon graphics (R500) and Revolution graphics (Hollywood) were almost completely cut-off from each other, were not allowed to communicate, although the two seperate teams DID actually help each other on a few things.

*Hollywood is some sort of exotic design, being done in the Valley. or some parts of it are exotic.

*used stuff that is a continuation of some of the things from Flipper that were inovative, but also some things from R5xx.

*and Xenon graphics was mainly being done actually at ATI's Toronto Center in Canada, as well as in Marlborough Mass.

*the ArtX team had been spread through out all of ATI.

*the guy who wrote the post said that he did not pursue the fact that the two teams were cut off from each other for legal reasons. Nintendo would not want MS getting technology it liked, or vice versa. the guy said he wished he had looked into it more. or something like that.

no doubt I forgot a few things, or mixed something up as I am only going by what I remember. I am 95% certain it was on beyond3D and not another forum. but when I search for any of the key words (Toronto, ArtX, exotic, etc) I come up with nothing.

sigh. nobody is gonna believe me. i guess the post got deleted.

i remember

i think the post was in "can ms sue nintendo" thread which was deleted

I was the one that posted that based upon what someone who claimed to have worked on the Xenon GPU at ATI.

He use to post a bit on Teamxbox. He claimed it was never referred to internally as r500 but codenamed Xenos.

I'd post all the info again but Im assuming it was deleted for good reason. (must be true then)

Actually the quote was taken out of context. The original Teamxbox post was about Xenon and Revolution actually being the same console. He was just stating he wished he would have looked into that possibility. Not that its true or anything. He claimed the designs were too different to really share any technology.

Just follow this thread and you'll find what you're looking for

thank you Pozer!

I knew I hadn't imagined it. 8)

Well, someone knows a bit about ATI... good job.

Yes the team that worked on the Xenon GPU RTL was based out of Marborough while the physical design was done by a dedicated group within the Toronto site. The old ARTX team is a bit spread out now. A few of them gave us a hand in Toronto on some extraction and general technology issues.

When I joined the physical design team I was told that there was a separate group doing the Nintendo hardware and that there wasn't any communication between the two groups for the sake of keeping intelectual property separate and free of contamination. Besides, I always assumed that the desings would be different enough that there was little value to talk to them anyway. I never really looked into the issue any further. I don't even know what the ATI codename was for the Nintendo products. I was simply told that the physical design was being done in the valley (San Jose).

Now just because I was told that the hardware was unique, I have no evidence to say that it was indeed separate. I never confirmed it. I never had any reason to doubt them. I kind of wish I would have looked into it. At least far enough to confirm that there was active design data under the codename. Sorry... can't really say either way if the rumor is true or not. I have nothing concrete.

I was going to reply to that. forgot what I was gonna say, but at least I know its around so i can comment on it when im more awake :)

Makes me wonder which is the more powerful of the two.

The answer is obvious.

Really? I dont know it. Just because a console comes out later... doesnt mean its tech is newer or better... In reality Xbox2 is the last developed console considering work on PS3 and NREV started even before Xbox was released..

I'm sure each console will have some strengths the other lacks... that's inevitable when consoles launch within a few months to a year or two of eachother - especially when different design philophies are applied.

I've not established what the codename is internally to ATI, other than it isn't R500.
