Cool mature Mario pic.

that's taken from a page of videogame related works by artists
sorry, i can't remember the site now but you can buy their works from it

No - just no. Not only the notion of a mature Mario but also this thread doesn't even belong here. It not talking about technical console issues at all. You could try it in the games forum but even then it's not a valid discussion point based on what's happening in the real world of consoles. Otherwise we could just start posting renders from Splutterfish and asking 'what if?'

(What? You say that's been done already? MAn, I thought I'd had an original idea!)

*shivers

Thats just creepy. I remember I conversation somewhere, where people where talking about how Mario would look if they really wanted to make him look "real". Since visuals are getting better and better each console generation. Mario has always been a cartoonish bright and happy type of game...and to bring it down with real looks and real venues would make the game just a acid/weed/heroine trippy game that would freak out kids and parents.

A lifelike Mario stepping on Goombas and fighting dinosaurs while trying to save a princess who rules over mushroom people...yeah...lets all smoke crack...lol...I don't think Nintendo would ever do that to the franchise...but it WILL be interesting to see what they do to freshen the gameplay with the Revolution.

EDIT: Mature Mario? He already is Mature...I mean...i'm 19 and I can't even sport a stash like that yet!!!!

Moved this to Console Games but as Shifty says, it really doesn't belong in here either. Cool pic, but not relevant to much.

I totally loved that pic. If I was at nintendo, I'd track down that artist and hire him to make concept art, and then start development on a mario with that more industrial, grizzled theme... It looks friggin fantastic.

...Except for that Mario REALLY needs to wear workboots, heh. He IS a plumber after all. :p

Following the trend of that picture, I would actually make an obstacle in the game Marios health. Throughout the game you must keep Marios heart rate below a certain level...if you cross that level, Mario will have a heart attack...the only way to save mario is to find a star and "Zap" his heart back to life...mushrooms (now coined as "teh shrooms") will cause him to go into a "psychodelic zone" where Mario can fly and talk to the other mushrooms....Princess Peach will be a hot (think of the chick in Red from Bugs Bunny) Princess and Bowser will actually be Gary Busey in disguise :devilish: :devilish: :devilish:

EDIT: Hell...now that I think about it.....thats a game I would play!!!!

Anyone who can seriously like that pic. as a direction they want to see the series move in, haven't at all "gotten" what Mario is about. They haven't understood what makes the games great or indeed the whole spirit of Nintendo.
It's a fun picture, but only because it's grotesque, only as reminder what Mario must never ever be allowed to turn into.

We've GOTTEN it alright, we've just had enough of it that's all. Had enough of the sugary-cute, the cuddly, the primary colors, the fluff, the no-sharp-edges-anywhere, all of that bull.

or indeed the whole spirit of Nintendo.
Spirit of nintendo went old, musty and cloy long ago. They need to evolve as well just like the rest of the universe. Instead they've stayed in the same place for far too long, and it's cost them market share ever since the heydays of the SNES. It's been a decade of diminishing market share and lost influence; once Mario was a more recognized character than mickey mouse. Do you think it still is that way?

You mean YOU'VE gotten it! Just 'coz you don't like the Marioverse doesn't mean other don't. Leave it for those that like it. Otherwise what's next for long-running 'nice' IPs that have always been loved for their niceness? A Winnie-the-Pooh FPS? GTA in Beatrix Potter's universe? Mario's a cutesy character for cutesy games and that's where he belongs. Anyone wanting to drag him into a different universe is guilty of the modern and ubiquitous mentality of 'o-oh, lack of ideas, quick let's reuse an old idea because we're incapable of coming up with new characters'. Considering how Nintendo drag Mario into every other product they produce I'd have thought people would rather they left him out of future offerings and come up with something new.

Great ideas, I would buy both of those!

Fair point, but surely these characters need to develop stylistically along with the increase in console power. Was it a technical or artistic decision to make Mario a blocky primary coloured character in the first place?

I'm not out to ruin mario or nintendo, if that's what you're in your delusions think. I want to refresh the series, make it more mature. Like nintendo themselves is doing with zelda and the more grim teenager Link rather than happy-go-lucky pre-pubescent Link.

GTA in Beatrix Potter's universe?
Hey, Beatrix Potter could do with some vice! :D She must have been crazy, being locked up like that, we need to bring some realism into her delusions of fluffyness and cute... ;)

Slightly off topic, but check it out; According to sources within Paramount, Sopranos star James Gandolfini is slated to take up the role of top-secret super-spy Sam Fisher in the upcoming movie adaptation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, based on the popular video game franchise. While studio executives have shed little light on the project, Gandolfini himself has recently commented, "Yeah, it's a challenging role, but it's something that I feel that I'll be able to really step into physically." Aside from learning the nuances of the character, Gandolfini is also gearing up for the more action-oriented role by playing the games themselves for inspiration. "I gotta do this split jump thing, or sometimes I gotta be hangin' upside down and $#(%", says Gandolfini. "Most of the time, I can just grab the mutha^*%# by the neck, and drag 'em behind the dumpster or something." While Splinter Cell: the Movie has yet to begin production, it has also been rumored that Gandolfini may replace actor Tobey Mcguire in the upcoming Spider-Man 3.

Tony Soprano, the main character.

He always talked of loosing some weight but didn't feel playing the role of TS was apropriate for a lighter weight version....I could see him doing the role well slimmed down a bit.
