Connection problem, help appreciated

Lately (can't remember exactly when and especially can't remember if I actually did anything to have this problem) it has been extremely slow when accessing websites. It takes a while before a page loads. This happens with all websites I visit (including my own ISP's!). I can see that there's nothing being transferred to/fro between my router and web server. However, downloading of stuff is still pretty fast (for my ADSL 512k) once a download starts.

Anyone know where I should begin my check? I'm using WinXP Pro.

Have done the basic clear your browser cache and scan for spyware with Adaware or Spybot search and Destroy. Also try resetting your router. Just unplug it for about ten seconds and plug it back in. I almost forgot clearing temporary internet files also helps.

There's always the possiblity that your ISP is having issues. Oh and how long has your comp been on it is possible that you just need to restart or use a program to free up some ram.

Do you have a program that monitors interenet traffic? Sygate personal firewall does if you dont. Also have you checked if you messed up any settings in your router. Could always try the reset button on it as a last resort.

Also did you load any new programs? Even if it shouldn't have anything to do with it it sometimes messes things up.

Reverend,

Have you made any progress on this? Could you list the hardware and software involved in some detail so we can all mull it over? It would also be interesting to read your settings for your Internet connection and the connection type. Are you using a router nor not? Does the problem come and go (at a certain time of day)? Etc etc. The more details the better.

I just unplugged every single wire attached to the router (power, ethernet, USB, dsl line), then re-plugged all of them, booted up and everything is peachy.

Must be Big Brother.

Must be big brother. Next time it happens and if it is soon try to uninstall and then reinstall the TCP/IP stack. It's easy and fixed quite a few problems.

I've been having similar problems for about a month now.
The connection drops several times a day, and if I power down the ADSL modem, the connection might come back up.
My line should be 8meg/1meg, but all the speed tests sow less than 1Meg/less than 0,5Meg.
I've contacted my ISP, but yet they have only asked more questions about my setup.
I've reinstalled XP and resetted and set up the router and ADSL modem again, but the situation remains.
Previously my line had worked well , with up to the speed I had hen (2/521), but after my ISP was supposed to raise the speeds to 8/1, the problems started.

I've had problems like this, and it seems to be related to my ISP's DNS servers. They are always down, slow, or I get packet loss pinging them. It would take forever to get the page to start loading, but it always loaded fine once it started. My download speeds were normal as well. Just an annoying 5-10 second delay when going to a new site. I put in a few different DNS servers in my router config, and everything has worked great since then. I usually just grab one from each of the groups below, and everything has worked fine since then.

It could have also been a very light build up of residue along the contacts in one of the wires you disconnected from the router that you "cleaned" when you plugged/unplugged it....I had that happen once.
