Commercial material systems.

This is a question going out to all the artists out there in 3d-land... assuming there are some here. Anybody out there who has experience working with anything from UnrealEd and Quake to Blitz3D and Torque to MAX and Maya.

I'm just wondering about the material editing tools and how you use the systems and if there's anything you all like or dislike about them. If there's anything in particular that stands out as strengths and weaknesses about them and so on. I'm working on a similar tool myself, but I would like to collect and amalgamate opinions before moving too far forward.

Not being an artist, working with the tools directly would tell me little beyond an overall overview of how to use.
