Colin Mcrae Rally 04

sir doris

Regular
Has anyone played CMR4 on the PS2? I liked the first 2 and had them on my PC (looked amazing at the time), however I only downloaded the demo of CM3 on my PC and found it still had the same "steering from one wheel in the middle of the car" type handling as the first two, which seemed really dated after GT3 on the PS2. I also wasn't very impressed with the framerate on my 9700Pro. Now I see CMR04 is out on the PS2 and it is supposed to fix the handling according to something I read and the graphics are suppoes to be nice too. Just wondered if anyone has tried it yet?

Thx.

personally, and please do take this with a pinch of salt, i think WRC3 (coming out soon, and the other 2) is such a superior game to colin in almost every way it's not even funny. it's one of the only games to give a beutiful sense of scale, which is not provided AT ALL by Colin games. for scale i mean, seeing miles and miles of environment u have to drive into and then your car looking as small as an ant compared to it. but maybe that's just me.

WRC's look better than Colins, but I didn't like the handling in WRC and WRC2. Haven't tried WRC3 yet.

Didn't like the handling in Colin 3 either, Colin 4 is better.

WRC handling felt weird, because the cars felt oddly light. And colliding on a trackside fence often turned the car on an odd angle even on low speeds.
Neither of these rally games have achieved the handling of GT3 rally sections, which is 1000x funnier to drive than Colin or WRC.

Maybe Colin or WRC is more true to life in handling, can't say 'cos haven ever driven a rally car. But GT3 gives much better impression of what I think driving a rally car would be like.

i always thought the feel of WRC is much much more realistic to "what i think might be like to drive a rally car on one of those roads" :D i mean u can feel the bumps and everything, while Colin and GT3 are just old style mainly flat roads. the fact that WRC games push a lot more out of PS2 than any of those other 2 helps. maybe it's psychological..

It's just the opposite london-boy :)

In GT3 you can feel every bump on the road, even the view shakes vigorously while WRC it is more stable.

And speaking of psychology, in WRC the tinny car and crashing sounds may be one reason why the car feels so 'light'. Also when driving with a wheel (mine is Logitech "GT3 wheel") the force feedback in WRC games is almost nonexisting, while in GT3 the wheel shakes rattles and rolls.

Yeah I always felt the rally tracks in GT3 don't really reflect what rally tracks are really like, also the steering always seemed a little to slow and steady. However by comparison CMR always seemed a bit twitchy, like you could make the nose of the car just move left or right much quicker than if it actually tracked with the wheels. This effect was amplified to beyond beleivable with CM2 on tarmac, thoroughly unconvincing.

Do you have a release date for WRC3? Rabid; have you played CMR04?

Have played only the demo of CMR4. So my opinions are not to be taken too heavily, and it's all imo and my personal preference.

Have you only played WRC1? I've sampled it and then skipped it, it was too much of a arcade rally racer IMHO. In WRC2 they pumped up the sim part of the game. I played the game right away on pro mode and it was good, so goooood ... yes, the penalty for mistakes is hefty, but it is so rewarding to master the game. In WRC2 you feel ever bump, the in-game camera is shaking wild on gravelly tracks and it is stable on asphalt ones. IMHO the car behaviour is just right, rally cars are light (stripped down to the essential) and rally roads do not provide grip nor traction. I sampled every CMR, and I like WRC2 better ...
