Close-up PS3 + Heat Sink ?

I would think the heatsink is rather large in the ps3 to keep it at low temperatures and low noise like the reports have stated/confirmed. Which probably aids in/gives the machine it's very large weight.

Whats with the copper heatsink picture? I'm seeing aluminum or silver heatsinks in the PS3 shots.

It looks big in the PS3.The copper is just to show what one looks like.

Look in the back.

mmmh no, this seems to me as a cpu heatsink for pc, I hope that sony will provide a custom efficent HS, with an heat pipe or something similar

That's not a PS3 heatsink, that's just an old and crappy PC sink. PS3 would never use a heatsink with a fan strapped on top of it (very bad, inefficient design), nor with a beveled edge machined into it to accommodate the lever of a ZIF socket...

If I was to hazard a guess I'd say what we see there is cooling fins belonging to the PSU.

Guden Oden, I think he may have posted the PC heatsinks to show what heatsinks actually look like for the few that may not know here. :)

His picture's still not what the PS3 sink's gonna look like. Oh, it'll have fins, and they'll likely be attached to a base plate, but that's as far as the likeness'll go I wager.

This is a better place to post my fan observations.

1) It's very large. Taking from the edge of the metal encasing, it looks near 15cm to me. Any likelihood Sony have gone with a size up from the standard largest 120mm fans, or is it a bigger case for a standard fan size?

2) It's underneath the motherboard! Why would they do this? What airflow are they aiming for?
