ClamShell Advance

You are complaining about how it looks?? Let's hear your design.... How would you redesign the GBA so that it will be tiny(yet still have the same size screen)??? How would you make it ergonomic and yet still be small?? Come on, it seems you guys have a solution considering how you are complaining about it.

That's my design. Make it so it fits every hand comfortably as it massages my neck and upper shoulders. Oh, and it should make perfect martinis as well (even though I don't drink it'd still be cool to impress friends that way).

Anyhow your argument is specious. People either love the look of it or hate it (or anything in between for that matter) yet why do they need to have to have design credits inorder to form their opinion? Answer, they don't. Don't you dislike the look of some cars? Why don't you design one before coming to that conclusion?

Hmm...I wonder why Nintendo went with those proprietary connectors :?

I guess they don't want people to just use any old AC adaptor and file false warranty claims when they fry their units? That headphone jack adapter makes some sense with regards to reliability though, kinda inconvenient IMO.

Teasy you can buy various attachments for the existing GBA, like tv tuner, MP3 payer/recorder, camera, FM radio, PDA etc.

Here's one of the MP3 attachments. I think there are 3 different MP3 attachments from different manufacturers.

Here's a link to some of the attachments available.

It’s a combined charge plug and headphone adapter plug. Quite clever IMO because connectors is actually a lot more space consuming than one might at first think, the only problem is that you probably can’t play while charging up the battery and use headphones at the same time (actually I don’t know if you even CAN play and charge at the same time).

mmh...

gonna replace my GBA by the new one, looks cute (to me) and has lite screen.

That's a bad analogy considering that there are like thousands of designs for cars and only 4(?) designs for every iteration of gameboys. Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Advance, and now Gameboy SP.

The new Gameboy SP is developed with portability in mind. To keep that portability, is it possible to make it ergonomic or pretty looking? People don't seem to consider these things when they are complaining. By complaining, they imply they can think of something better or else why would they be complaining?

Let's take the first XBOX controller for example, when it first came out, people(including game reviews) made a big fuss about the size of the thing and the button layout(even though a some people didn't mind it). I remember many threads about it that said the controller can be smaller and the button layout can be spaced more apart to avoid pressing all of them.

Nope. The actual number of products/designs available is completely irrelevant. Your argument is a fallacy because you're expecting people with (negative) opinions to try to make a similar but improved product. Where is the connnection between the two? Answer, there is none. Again, just because you may not like the look of the Pontiac Aztec (who does btw?) does that mean before you offer your opinion you should have competing designs for it? Of course not.

You'll get no argument from me that people may offer their opinions a bit too freely (including myself). But perhaps the people with clashing opinions are also guilty of reading too much into said opinions.

Design for ergonomics and portability? The old GBA is perfect in BOTH IMO, except it doesn't have a screen cover or light, but the lack of either doesn't really bother ME much. *much*. If I ever get enough money to afford it I probably will have an Afterburner installed, but I won't be buying this clamshell... I can't stand the slim design.

this announcement really showed how ignorant, bitter and pathetic the majority of people are..

all I have heard from many GBA bashers for years was, @#$% you nintendo, the screen is too dark, make one I can see and I might buy one..

so Nintendo answers, makes a new unit, the whole thing is not a forced purchase, its just an option for those who want it, and now all I am hearing all over the net now.. @#$% you Nintendo, just trying to suck up our money, why would you just make the same thing just with a screen we can see? even though I bitched and said you should for the past year, doesnt mean you should have done it, thats BS!!!!!!!

It's a legitimate complaint. I don't like the new design. I didn't like the GBA design to begin with though, mainly because it should have had four face buttons instead of the triggers. I'll pass.

That's MY one gripe about GBA, why the hell is it the "SNES port system" with only two face buttons?! There are some games whose control schemes got SCREWED on the GBA to accomodate only two face buttons - DOOM comes to mind.

They should have had the same buttons as an SNES pad - two shoulder AND four face (LRABXY).

Well personally, I complained when the first GBA came out because the screen was very hard to see and the ergonomics were, IMO, terrible. I bought a 10$ 3rd party device that clips onto the GBA to add 2 handles so that was no longer a problem but the screen has always bothered me. So much so that I played my GBA for about 2-3 months following launch and I've barely touched it since. When I saw the GBA SP it didn't take me long to decide that I was gonna sell my old GBA and buy that one. So, no complaints here.

The design of GBA SP is obviously an attempt to make the system more acceptable to adults. Rather then looking like a toy it looks like a PDA.

Basically while the GBA screams toy the GBA SP screams sophisticated electronic device, especially the silver one (well ok it doesn't scream it, but it says it clearly enough).

As an adult, if you wanted to play a game in public (on a bus or at work) which system would you feel more comfortable using.. the GBA or the GBA SP? It'd be the GBA SP every time IMO.

Nintendo should have added MP3 capabilities. It fits right in with the new design. :D

MP3 support can easily be added with a cartridge based addon which are already available for the GBA classic.

Also for all you whiners, Nintendo will continue to sell the GBA classic so go get yourself an Afterburner (which has dropped in price $25) and some rechargeable NiMH AA batteries ;)

Nintendo can't please everyone :!:

BTW just thought I'd mentioned that there's also a solar pack available for the GBA classic that allows the builtin batteries to be recharged by solar power 8)

I can't wait to get the GBA SP so I can hook it up to my GCN. Anyone know what GCN games support GBA linkup?

Whiners? Might as well call everyone who likes the new design fanboyz. ;)

The only two that I have and know of (just got my GCN for Xmas) is Metroid Prime/Fusion & Animal Crossing.

The thing is people are whining about the GBA SP but no one is forcing them to buy it especially when the GBA classic will still continue to be produced ;)

So far I haven't heard of anyone who has actually tried it at CES or otherwise and complained about it. All I hear are complaints from people who haven't ;)

Heh, that's the way it goes with a lot of biased people.

"Hey, I really really hate Metroid Prime and I would never buy it! BTW, I haven't played it yet.. *goes back to Halo*"
