ClamShell Advance

Wow, there's a surprise.

Here I was thinking it was going to be one of those "we don't need no stinkin internet" technologies where all Gamecubes could talk to eachother

The reason why it's edge lit is because it uses transflective LCD technology.

It's not the same type of LCD as in a laptop computer. That's why you can't turn off the backlight on a laptop and use it in the sunlight.

That's *really* good news if true. Transflective screens are simply the best LCD technology so far. New Sony Clies and HP Ipaqs are using such screens and look stunning.

More pics.

Can't wait to see how well the lighting system works.

From Gamespot:

Attempting to play Metroid Fusion with the new integrated front screen light switched off proved to be a fruitless exercise--which is hardly surprising given that the screen on the GBA SP is essentially identical to that of the GBA. Switching the new integrated light on however, improved things dramatically, and we're pleased to report that we were able to enjoy a perfect view of the game from every conceivable angle, and even when we deliberately moved into areas of the conference venue that would almost certainly render the existing Game Boy Advance unplayable due to the lighting.

Sounds promising.

Hmm, I still say I don't like the slim controls. And the shoulder buttons are TINY! D:

WTF... I think they should rerelease the standard GBA design with the light as well, for people who don't like the 'clam' design. :\

You should wait until you have it in your hands before assuming it's not ergonomically comfortable ;)

You could always buy some self adhesive padding to thicken it up

Just by LOOKING at it, the thing has about the same width as a Game Boy Colour, and I can't use a GBC any more due to cramps.

And the padding won't help how far in the buttons are... :\

Again from Gamespot:

Before actually getting our hands on the new console our only concerns--based on the photos that we'd seen--were that it might not be as comfortable as the existing model and that the shoulder buttons could prove awkward to use. Our fears were soon put to rest however, as the new handheld is every bit as comfortable to hold as a Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Color, and features shoulder buttons that, while much smaller than those on the GBA, are actually more comfortable to use. The directional pad and buttons have also been changed very slightly, and while they're practically flush with the surface of the console so as not to touch the screen when the flip-top is closed, they felt just as comfortable as those on previous Game Boy consoles and we had no problems playing with them whatsoever.

GameSpot quote mentions that it's just as comfortable as the GBC. Looks like Tag could be right IF you have problems holding the GBC to begin with.

yes it was but that wasn't my point. I was expecting them to show something they were working on right now. The first game i could imagine using any gyroscopic controller/device would be that game.

Charging plug is not standard circular design, though. See the picture.

New GBA doesn't have headphone jack, and there is a special mini adapter cable for that. Minor nuisance...

You are complaining about how it looks?? Let's hear your design.... How would you redesign the GBA so that it will be tiny(yet still have the same size screen)??? How would you make it ergonomic and yet still be small?? Come on, it seems you guys have a solution considering how you are complaining about it.

Well I sold my GBA a while ago partly because of the lack of a lit screen and partly due to the fact that the screen got scratched. So this new GBA solves all my problems, the option for a lit screen, with good battery life, and the fold up screen to end the risk of scratching. Also I don't mind the way it looks, yeah its not great looking, but I like the fact that its really small when folded up. I'll deffinately be getting one of these.

BTW, did someone mention that this GBA can play MP3's?.. if so then how is that possible?

Wow, those pics are useful. It doesn't look quite as small as I expected, which is a good thing.

The front-lit screen looks amazing, too. Perhaps better than the Afterburner/GBA combo.

'Course, I already went through with the AB.. so unless my GBA breaks you won't see me getting a GBA-SP.
