Rechargeable batteries (as in lithium-ion type?!), "lit display" (backlit?!), and foldy. Feb 14th in Japan, March in EU and NA. ~$100 too.

Looks positively fugly to me, but I guess its nice and more 'pocket' friendly. I hope its backlit.. even then, the only thing for me that can save the GBA from being Steel Batallion trade-fodder is FF IV, V, VI :p

Ah well, I'm sure someone's bound to love it.

It's backlit/edgelit with an on/off switch. The rechargeable battery pack allows 10 hours of operation with the light on and 18 with light off. It looks awesome btw and it's TINY too!!! Very nice simple industrial design I might add. It makes a lot of sense now with that wireless peripheral attachment and all. Oh the possibilites!!! Way to go Nintendo!!! I can even play MP3s and watch tv on this thing!!

Yet another must buy for me 8)

> So this was nintendo's big annoucement? What else did they announce?

You seem to imply that Nintendo promised something big and failed to deliver. Nintendo didn't promise an announcement. It just said that ppl wouldn't be disappointed if they showed up. Of course with the insane expectations some ppl have there is little Nintendo can do to live up to them.

I think it was pretty cool. The fact that the announcement spanned three European cities and Jim Merrick has been transfered from NOA to NOE is a sign of commitment to the European market. The GASP was shown, the European 2003 line-ups for Cube and GBA were announced (Advance Wars 2!) and they offered your standard PR 2002 recap (Cube finished the year in the #2 position).

The NYC event happens later and Nintendo will also be in Vegas two days from now.

I'm not sure I like the design of this device - it doesn't look very ergonomic to hold - kinda top-heavy in a way with the flip-open lid and square shape. But it's probably light, so maybe that's not a problem. I guess I'd find it cooler in black color instead of that silver look that will undoubtedly fade with wear like those microsoft optical mice...

Since it's backlit, I can finally buy a GBA, but I did hope for more buttons. Oh well, you can't have everything. C+VG was right about most things other than that tough, it's got the rechargable battery, clamshell design, backlight...

It comes in black, blue and of course silver.

> Since it's backlit

It's frontlit.

> C+VG was right ...

Go wash your mouth with soap young man!

CVG got that from Edge. They steal news.

Grall: Adding buttons would effectively make it a new system and split the userbase.

Side comment: I don't like the return to the 'thin' design, I get cramps using my old GBC now... I don't like having my hands so close together to hold the damn thing. I like the normal GBA's 'wide' design like a full console controller...

I guess you don't like laptops then? :D

Laptops, yes, but thats no laptop - look at the horrible screen hinge location/relative size/shape lap tops to better than that.

The shape of the GBA was pretty cool, it made you wan to pick it up. That just looks boxy and ugly by comparison. I'd have prefered to see the designed Edge showed in which it maintained the GBA shape, but with a fliptop.

Still, I'm sure I'll still check it out.

captainhowdy,

I didn't "imply" anything, just relax. All I did was ask a bloody question... although it did turn out to be a lot less then SOME, people were expecting. I was thinking the annoucement would be some kind of new fangled joystick to ship with F-zero.

Why do you call me captainhowdy?

Yes, but most ppl are morons.

How the hell did you get that idea?!

Anyway, there's still the announcement in Vegas on the 9th which could be something else. Calling the GASP a technological breakthrough would certainly be stretching it and what would be the point in having ppl first show up in NYC and then having them go to Vegas two days after for the same stuff.

Oh well, I'm not impressed at all. I'm glad that it's finally lit (I *HATE* the way I have to hold my GBA at times) though. Revolutionary technology? Hardly.

I too prefer the shape of my GBA over to this new design.

That's pretty ugly. Front-lit instead of Back-lit is probably a big mistake as well. Hmm.... I was kinda looking forward to the "megaton". Too bad it turned out to be nothing. :(
