Cat 5

It's a little bit more nuanced than "it should just work". There is a different crossover configuration for gigabit than 10/100 speeds -- if you plug a 10/100 crossover cable into a gig port, it will never hit gig speeds. If you plug a gig crossover cable (there is such a thing...) into a 10/100 port, it gets confused and doesn't work.

You are correct though, crossover cables are mostly a thing of the past when talking about any gig-equipped network card (and a lot of older 10/100 ones too.) If I recall, anything gig-related is Auto-MDI/X so it will cross itself over if need-be.

Otherwise, the description that our lurker Destiny mentioned is exactly the right way to do it. Hold the plugs up next to eachother so you can see the very fine colored wires inside, and make sure they "match" patterns on both plugs. If the pattern is different on one plug, then it's a crossover (or a bad cable, but we're ignoring that :).)

At all ?

so i dont even need a crossover cable ?

If you appear to have a crossed cable, it will likely uncross itself or have you stuck at 100Mb.

Else, the title had me thought about Cat's Eyes!, it was a great anime I watched on TV when I was a child. Had a really catching french intro song and it's what the mangaka responsible for City Hunter did before it.

Not for anything modern. You'll need to go back to much older 10/100 chips to not have auto MDX. I keep one in my tools in the car just in case, but haven't used it in several years.
