Carmack's next Engine.

What are your thoughts? It's obviously going to be built around DX10. However.. let's say he builds DOOM4 off of it(probably not, but for examples sake) do you think the graphics could look like this?

What are you thoughts on this.

And yes, this is from a now dead Xbox game called Strident, obviously renders though.

My thoughts on this? I think it's entirely possible taking a look at high end DOOM3 stuff already than comparing the Engine leaps.. his last engine(quake 3 right?) to D3 is a huge leap.[/img]

Who can tell? Apparently he thinks that Doom III's engine to going to last many moons as a viable base for new games..

A while back, he said the Doom 3 engine would still be used for 5 years. More recently, he said the advances in Pixel/Vetex shaders in OpenGL 2.0 are drastic enough that he'll need to make a new engine to take advantage of it.

From what i see of the doom 3 engine it will be great for a number of games. System shock and thief come to mind . I'm personaly waiting for the doom 3 engine. I believe this will offer me a better platform for making levels. THere is a ton that can be done. Its diffrent in that regard and I kinda like it. Half life 2 is nice to. But the engine is meant to be a fast paced shooter. Oh and paul dx 10 wont be able to do those renders in a real game at reasonable framerates and neither will the next gen consoles.

Never say never. Your always quick to doubt. Plus your in no position to say what an Xbox 2 can or cannot do, noone is.

Look at the leap from quake 3 to D3, gigantic. I have no reason to believe it will even be a tad bigger from D3 to whatever is next.

Maybe a next carmack engine won't exactly mimic this pic, but I haven't a doubt that it will come close.

Especially looking at how the D3 engine can supposidly do things like this.

I wouldn't say Doom3 is too too far off from the Strident Renders, let alone the fact that d3's graphics were actually set in stone a while ago basically.

paul go to ign.com download the halflife 2 video . That quality is what I'm expecting from next gen consoles. That quality is what i'm expecting from the dx 10 cards. But here is the catch. I expect it to run with 4xfsaa and 16tap aniso. If it does not then it will be crap to me. I expect consoles to run it with high fsaa too. ALthough memory will be a problem.

From what I've seen recently, Carmack's next engine is powered by 50% peroxide, alcohol, and platinum :)

I have a feeling that we'll be seeing the D3 engine for quite a spell actually. After all, licensing is how Id makes the lions share of it's worth. I'm thinking that teh Carmack will be doing his next gen engine on the OpenGL 2.0 specs (doesn't D3 have some of this or is it just 1.4/5?), or perhaps a later spec that is in the proposal stage... :? I doubt he'll be using DX10 since it goes against his grain.

Also consider that Doom3 isn't actually out yet ;) So the time between Quake3 and Doom3 just keeps growing every day.

Assuming Carmack's next game based on his next generation engine comes out ~5 years after Doom3 comes out, there isn't much doubt in my mind that the game will have the quality of those Strident renders. Of course that is a long way off...around 2009 :(

Does anyone know whether there is any place where I can download it without having to open an account or use special, fishy download programs (Internet Explorer included)?

Edit: Err... never mind. Just tried the second link...

Just to be clear for the few who don't already know about it (and it took me to the second read to spot the smiley): I was referring to http://www.armadilloaerospace.com

It's only his weekend job, but he's about to produce a new engine there :)

Yes, I got it...;) I'd looked at that some months ago. What I want to know is what happens to the guys inside the "concrete pipe" when they hit 50 miles up (assuming they survive)..?....;) It seemed to me that a porthole was not in the plans...(I'm really hoping they'll send up a monkey, first, however...;))

In response to the original question...

I believe I remember reading in some interview that "this generation" (DX9) cards would be the foundation for his next engine. (Could be mistaken on that though.)

However, that probably applies in the same way that "DX7 cards with stencil and cube-map support" are the foundation for Doom3. Those cards in that generation can physically run with full features....but you wouldn't wan't to, and in fact, you won't be able to by default.

Dude, why did you bring consoles into this?

I am talking about the graphics quality of Carmacks next PC game engine, nothing more.

Not DX10, not consoles.

and why do you expect dx10 games to only look as good as Dx9 games? Why not better?

Otherwise your expectation for the next generation of hardware has allready been made and you can be happy in mediocrity!
