Can this be true....475 for the 6800Ultra core now?

Hey Baron I thought the 6800 ultra was gonna cost $499 are you 100%sure that the price will be $399, just ive seen a few rumours and screenshots of prices being $499 Ultra and $399 non ultra.

Why do people KEEP guessing what clocks are going to be? No one knows for certain so why all the supposition? No one who has posted in this thread is "in the know" so 475 is just as good a guess as 400.

You dare doubt the power of the BARON?!
I do know that 6800 Ultra is 400Mhz. No ifs, ands, or buts.

I'll keep this in mind on the day they come out ...

I'm pretty sure it will be $399 and the NU will be $299. Too illogical if the NU is $299 and the Ultra is $499.

You forget that Nvidia hasn't been that good with logic over the past year.

You forget that NVIDIA is always logical when it comes to money.

They are being more logic now, and it seems that this will bring them not so bad times :)

Well Ive read this site for a long time as well as EB (just havent registered at EB yet lol) and baron is usually right, he is in the know as you put it.

If Nvidia do price the ultra at that then its good for us but wont that hammer there profit margins and I mean hammer them.

And of course, the non-ultra will have the same memory and GPU clocks...right?

I'd love it if the Ultra was $399, but if the only reasoning you're using is that you consider the $499 price "illogical", then you haven't been paying attention. It's a premium high-end part, the yields may be very low on the components at that speed, twice the amount of expensive memory, etc.

9800XT vs. 9800Pro, anyone? P4 EE vs. P4? Come on Baron, it's not as if there's a shortage of examples out there in the past decade. The very top-end always has a crap price/performance ratio compared to the mid-range product.

And putting it in direct competition with the XT wouldn't hammer their profit margins? ;)

1. I know that there is an A2 revision capable of running at 475Mhz on the core.

2. NVIDIA has said that they are willing to sacrifice profit margins to regain the performance crown this generation.

Maybe the 6800 Ultra will launch at $499, emphasis on launch. By mid-June, or maybe even before the 6800 Ultra is available, a 6850 or 6900 Ultra will be coming down the pipes. It wouldn't surprise me if it will be PCI Express-only with significantly higher clocks, no bridge chip, and things like that because the NV45 has apparently taped out (and did so around the same time as the NV40).

Doubt it will be 475Mhz. But didnt some variants of the 5950 run above spec? It could be they may release their won chip that runs a bit higher than the Nvidia reference design.

But until ATI beats them I doubt they would go ahead and do something like this. If the XT comes out and beats the 6800 Ultra I bet we will see a 6850 shortly with an increased clockrate.

Yes it would as ATI will just match them on price no matter what price they set and ATI if I remember rightly have always been able to develop there parts cheaper plus they dont seem to have had any production problems at TSMC where Nvidia has had problems with IBM thereby driving up Nvidias costs.

This all depends on the performance of ATI's part, yet if it ends up being superior it could really hurt Nvidia a lot more.

Edit: sorry paul I misread your question  I understand what you mean now and i frigged up

I hardly doubt rumours are going to die, especially when the CEO is making statements like:

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. When asked about ATi's ability to snatch the performance crown from NVIDIA he responded with, "Tiger Woods doesn't win every day. We don't deny that ATI has a wonderful product and it took the performance lead from us. But if they think they're going to hold onto it, they're smoking something hallucinogenic.''

Statements like this makes me wonder if the NV 6800 has some performance surprises in store ...

Yeah but just remember, this is the same guy that said Low K is DANGEROUS! :devilish:
