Broadband?

I have a big question/concern. My cable modem is down stairs but I do have cable up stairs, which is where my GC is. Will I need to buy a seperate cable modem for my GC? I know I have to buy the broad band adapter. Also same question for X Box.

Why not get a Router and just wire some cable through out your house hook it up to your console?

For most cable modems all you need to do is buy a router.

On the other hand, if you have one of those sucky USB cable modems, then you will have to buy an Ethernet card, and run Internet Connection Sharing on your computer, and leave your computer turned on when you want to game.

There's also many potential problems depending on exactly how your ISP has configured the cable modem, and on what their terms of service are. For example, they may want to charge you extra for using a second device with the cable modem.

There's one big exception: AOL Broadband. If you use AOL Broadband as your ISP, you won't be able to use your game console at all, because AOL Broadband uses non-standard communication protocols that can't be shared with game consoles. (At least nobody's figured out how to make it work yet.)

Ok. The only problem with that is that would be alot of cable to have going through my house. How much do the wireless run for and are they any good?

Ethernet has a 50 ft max length before it needs to be repeated. You can probably get one for ~$20 USD or so.

Wireless is probably the way to go for your setup.

You'll need a base station for your PC & cable modem: Linksys BEFW11S4

And one of these for your Xbox: Linksys WET11

Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried this -- I have my Xbox and my PC in the livingroom, and use 100baseT Ethernet to wire them together.

10BaseT Ethernet over Cat3/5 UTP cable has a maximum segment length of 100m / 328 ft (& 500m over baseband coax).

Are you sure about that? There are several flavors of Ethernet, including 10Base2 (10 Mbps, 200 meters), 10BaseT (10 Mbps, 100 meters, twisted-pair), and 100BaseT (100 Mbps, 100 meter, twisted-pair).

50 ft/meters is still not even close to 100 meters (200 meters 10Base2) when measuring cable

mkillio: I think you should run a cable, it's also futureproof if you get more consoles, you just add a switch at the end where you connect your console.
