Broadband... AT LAST!

Well, after waiting for about a year (could be shorter or longer, can't really remember) since broadband became available in Malaysia, I've finally decided to apply for it. I'm currently typing this while connected.

It's a "basic" package, just ADSL 384k/128k, mostly because there have been many complaints about this service (mostly because it's just much slower speed than advertised) provided by our country's leading ISP... and after a few attempts, the complaints seem right. Downloading the ATI's 4.7s (28.8MB) took 4 minutes, which works out to about 160k/s 'ish.

I'm hoping things improve with the ISP before I upgrade.

In any case, should be nice enough for a UE3 engine demo-test-benchmark download. Am I joking about this?

Actually, 4 mins, 28.8 megabytes, that works out to 122kiloBYTES per second.
384k/128k typically means kiloBITS (like every bandwidth measurement i've ever seen for any consumer service), so i'd say complaints about speed are a wee unfounded, considering you are getting 3 times the speed the service claims to provide....

my DSL gives me 768k/128k, which is shit - about 80kB downloads, and 12kB up.
shite. And it used to be totally uncapped, giving me 2Mb. Bastidges.

Yup, just realized the "mistake" (= bonus). Trying to sort this out with the ISP... although, really, there is really nothing to sort out, right? :) ;)

Yep.

has a java app that tests your line speed. Also it has other tools/checks to make sure your computer is running tcp correctly. great site on networking.

epic

i can't complain with my 4.5mb down 640 up @7.5euro/month withno datalimit  muhuehehauahahHAHAHAhheee

eehe, ehem, yeah ..

I don't have it at all, which philosophically could also mean my connection is better than any connection in the Universe. I'm connected via ether.

Hate too rub salt into a wound Rev but I've had high speed internet connection for the last 5 years. When I get on a machine with a 56k modem it feels like I've gone back to the stone ages. It won't be long before you become disenchanted with the "high speed" connection though. But all it takes is too sit at a machine with a 56k modem and you start to feel better about it again.

10 Mbit/s UP/DOWN here, fiber link, 30 euros per month, no time or data limits :)

I've had cable since '97. The download rates have been increasing since then...

The max consistent speed I've ever gotten was around 650KB/s.. It's usually around 500KB/s DL.

well, if this is gonna be "bigger dick" type stuff, I'll just pull out what i get at work :)

which is a direct T3.

I suffer at home though, with my lame dsl speeds. Apparently, i am now "too far" from the "command center" (their words) so they cut my speed. too bad htey didnt cut my bill at the same time.

8Mbit/800kbit ADSL here, did 924kb/s on the download test, not too shabby for a stoneage Nokia M11 modem with half duplex 10Mbit ethernet connection to the host... I get a fair bit of packet collisions at higher speeds, especially when running multiple connections at the same time like bittorrent for example which lags up network gaming.

Oh well, it WAS given to me for free by the service provider so why complain... :D

Well the biggest i've been on is the 100Mbit connection BT have supplied for the last few multiplay lans at newbury UK.

ati driver pack too about 4 seconds, 100MB patches in under 15 seconds, oddly it was often faster to download from the internet than the ftp on the lan itself.

stuck on 768/128k cable at home though :( No caps though which seems to be something that is getting rarer in the uk.

It reports :

Communication : 631.4 kilobits per second
Storage : 77.1 kilobytes per second
1MB file download : 13.3 seconds

At http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest , it reports :

2004-07-11 22:08:18 EST: 681 / 294
Your download speed : 697887 bps, or 681 kbps.
A 85.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 301731 bps, or 294 kbps.

So, basically I'm getting slightly less than twice the download speed/more than twice the upload speed of the 384k/128k package I subscribed for!

Shhh...
