Boy am I hot (ESPN NFL 2K4 XBOX)

Newcomer
I picked up a copy of ESPN NFL 2K4 today, specifically because it (supposedly) had 720p output (just like the back of the box says, and like more than one reviewer said).

Guess what? They couldn't get 720p to work for some reason and it only supports 480p widescreen. Wish I would have seen the threads on this problem before I put down $50 at Best Buy...

Best Buy won't take it back because the game isn't "broken". Reckless false advertising at the expense of the consumer. I understand that not everybody plays on an HDTV set, but damnit, if you advertise that the game does output 720p, some people are going to pick that title over a competitor's (Madden 2004) for that reason. Why else would you use it as an advertising point on the back of the box unless you thought it would allow you to sell more copies of the game?

I've already emailed Sega and have not received a response yet. A person on AVSForum said that they saw that the official response will be that they just didn't get 720p working right and already had the box covers printed to say that it was, and that they'll change it for the next print of box covers.

Thanks a lot, guys. What about people like me though?

I don't play sports games, but I agree that that does suck. 720p does look quite a bit better than 480p.

At least they gave you widescreen, though.

That's what sucks. I WOULD have bought Madden instead. The deciding factor in my mind was the 720p output of this game and the fact that I usually play with friends before the games start on Sunday on my 120" HDTV projection screen. 720p makes all the difference in the world there...

As far as I know you can go straight to the source. Write a letter to the publisher. It IS false advertising, and you COULD bring up grounds for a suit. (And though it's no worth it and they don't care, they also don't like people giving them bad press where they are clearly in the wrong.) Might take a bit, but you should be able to get reimbursed if nothing else. All depends how much that $50 is worth in personal effort. ;)

No, wait! I meant...

I actually wrote, "Boy am I pissed", but didn't really see a need for profanity over a stupid game, so I changed it to, "Boy amd I peed" but that sounded kind of stupid, hence the "hot".

Anyhow... you know what I meant! :)

I just checked my email and got a GREAT response from Sega. Check this out...

My email:
I recently purchased a copy of ESPN NFL 2K4, and made
the decision to purchase it instead of Madden 2004 or MS NFL Fever
primarily because ESPN NFL 2K4 offered 720p video output for HDTV. The back of the box says that 720p is supported.

When I got home and tried the game, I was very disappointed to learn that 720p was NOT supported and did NOT work. What I got was 480p
widescreen. This false advertisement has already stirred up a lot of upset
football fans on the internet and we would like to know why the game
has been advertised as outputting 720p when it obviously doesn't.

The retail establishment where I purchased the game from will not take it back, because they say it is "not broken". Well, it works, but not in the way that it was advertised.

Please provide an explanation for why the game does not output 720p and let me know how you will reimburse me for the game, since the retail establishment I bought it from won't.

Sega's response (a real laugher):

Thank you for e-mailing Sega Technical Support.

I do apologize for any inconveniences with ESPN NFL Football.
If you have the dashboard settings on the Xbox set to support all High
Definition formats it could cause it not to work. The problem might be
corrected by changing the Xbox dashboard configuration to indicate the
television does not support 720p. The TV will then receive the 480
resolution, which displays a viewable picture. Please contact us at
1-800-USA-SEGA if we can be of further assistance. Thank you for your
support.

Sincerely,

-Matt

So XB is a Sega console now all of a sudden, huh? Well that sure explains a thing or two... ;)

Oh all right! I won't try to take this lame attempt at a joke too far, I promise. :)

Other games can play in 720P on the xbox, maybe that's why it is Sega's fault? Why don't you just go to a PS2 board and post there, you'd "belong".

I'm confused? How is it MS's fault that Sega couldn't get 720p working, when many other developers have?

Customer email: "720p doesn't work, despite it being advertised on the box. All I get is 480p widescreen."
Sega email: "To get 480p, disable all other HDTV modes"
Customer: :?: :?: :?:
