Big blue thinking little green?

Barron's just published its take on the frenzied merger activity in the technology sector, and the venerable trade rag got most of the calls right. Intrepid buyout hunters could get their research started from a quality list like this one.

But my favorite buyout possibility isn't on the Barron's list. Say hello to Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD), which might just have a date with a big blue buyer.

Not one new reason and the old ones the writer has are the superficial ones we've found in the other half-billion IBM buyout stories we've gone through.

The reasons make sense, the possibility is there, the question is why has IBM not pulled? The guy is not the only person writing on the possibility and reasons as to why, and how IBM would want AMD and vice versa.

AMD has been cheaper than what it is now and IBM didn't bother.
IBM's semiconductor division on its own has made more money than it's making now and IBM didn't try anything.
IBM used to be bigger in hardware than it is now and it didn't.

It's not impossible that IBM could try something, but the chatter I've run across is more focused on whether IBM's pouring cash into the semiconductor division is worthwhile when it's services that make the money.
