Best game soundtrack?

I don't tend to buy or even look for soundtrack CDs, so I've really no idea just how many actually count for this thread...

Wipeout is a game that probably had a serious influence on my taste in music, as well as making me think for the first time (probably) that ingame music could be almost integral to the game itself and not just some random stuff to listen to while playing.

I have to be honest - not much else springs to mind as stuff I'd listen to outside of the games themselves, though I could probably list dozens of games where I like the music. I'd have to rake through my collection to spot anything else.

Completely agree with the Riven statement. The game just had an incredibly mood setting score. In fact, I've felt that way with almost all of the Myst games, from Myst all the way up through to Revelations (Haven't played the fifth, yet).

Robyn Miller did Myst and Riven, Jack Wall Exile and Revelations, and Tim Larkin End of Ages.

Yeah, those games are very well made. Myst was my first CD-ROM game and the very reason I bought a CD-ROM (x2...yay!). The way it all fell into place was nothing short of magic and the haunting music was what carried it all. Like a good movie, it becomes dull without the right sound. A scary movie is nothing without sound. Myst has the John Williams soundtrack of games. It grows into the visual aspects of games. It was so good that being reminded of it by this thread, I can hear it playing in my head now. That's gotta mean something (other than that I may be completely insane...)

I would also vote for Quake 2. It was simply awesome how it had that CD music soundtrack pumping, The music style may not be to everyone's liking, but it certainly helped set tone and keep your heart racing.

I can listen to those songs for hours a day (and at one point i used to :) ) and everytime i hear it i remember when i was 6 years old and i had just hit gannon with the master sword and pulled out my silver arrow and finished the deed only to find out that there was a whole new quest !!!!!

God those are some good memorys

Here you can find 20000+ midi s of game music.

The snes music quality was amazing in its time. Hear bubsy (for example) music from genesis and from snes and decide.

Edit: damm I can't find music from genesis bubsy . Try it in kega or gens and then try the snes version.

The Shenmue series is a grand collection of all sorts of stirring, orchestral pieces which score the wide scope of the story. The original Shenmue Orchestra CD release has the epic title tracks and powerful, sweeping compositions like the one on Wong's boat after the ambush at Beverly Hills Wharf, yet the background musics in the game which are specific to areas, like Guilin with its serene melodies and Chinese instrumentation, can be equally as accomplished. The music was so important to the development of the game that title tracks were actually composed before major production got underway so that the music could inspire the developers to keep their design ideals all the way through the many-year project.

The LUNAR series and Dark Wizard on the Sega CD have powerful soundtracks, and Dark Savior on the Saturn has some very distinctive tunes.

Dragon Force for the Saturn has some rousing, full orchestra scores for its eight generals' theme songs.

For now, I'll name only one and that will be Chrono Cross.
3 disc of musical goodness :)

OMG! Someone else likes that soundtrack too!:D

I also like the FFVII and VIII soundtracks, the halo soundtracks were okay but nothing special. Ridge Racer's soundtrack is pretty good too. I got most of the Silent Hill soundtracks, most of them are good, but some of the tracks are just random noise that can get quite irritating.

Is there a soundtrack available to the original Metal Gear Solid on PS1? (not twin snakes) If so I'd be tempted to get it.
