my personal order (most favorite at top)

-tekken
-street fighter
-mortal kombat (every game after ultimate sucks in comparison though)
-virtua fighter
-power stone
-soul caliber
-marvel vs capcom
-killer instinct
-def jam (the 2nd one specifically)
-KOF
-DBZ budokai (the last one that came out)
-DOA
-guilty gear
-ehergiz (yeah i actually enjoyed this ps1 fighter)
-bloody roar

all in all, i gotta say, they really dont make em how they used to.
tekken is still king to me though.

Gotta be SF.

I am surprised at the votes for Tekken and Soul Caliber. Soul Caliber is not exactly a thriving series and Tekken I think is on level with DOA for serious fans, aka it's not thought of well.

One would think it'd be all VF and SF.

Well for me personally, I think tekken, street fighter, and mortal kombat easily have the most interesting storylines which help in being immersed into the games. Street fighter for me rules the 2d fighters hands down. As for Tekken I love the variety of characters, and fighting styles to how they almost make you adjust to fighting different styles. Almost sounding strategic in a VF way, but still remaining very "arcady." It's funny, with Mokujin I can find myself easily pointing out each character's moves that are being mirrored. (which is weird cause there are like 35+ characters) Like I said before the story helps in loving the characters more. I think the first thing I do is when I get a tekken game is read the manual for characters bio's to see what happened since the last tekken. I suppose its an aquired taste for whatever fighter you like, but in my opinion tekken is the best 3d fighter.

Hopefully those voting and responding are basing their view on gameplay with graphics aside. I voted Street fighter and OTHER, other being the King of fighters series. I love the 2d fighters and their combo system and power ups. Also i enjoyed playing Killer instinct with its crazy combo system with street fighter style moves.

For me it is Tekken, for the following reasons:

- it has by far the most intuitive fighting system.

Each arm and each leg has its own button, square and triangle for left and right arm, cross and circle for left and right leg. That just works really, really well.

- it has lots of moves, but although it takes some dedication to learn them, it still works because of the intuitive button layout

- it has well developed fighting styles, with each style clearly recogniseable and individual moves can often be named by people trained in that style, and there are so many of them

- I am totally in love with its counters. They are great to watch and work well in the game

- it has a great sense of balance between the characters

There are other points, but these are my main ones.

Having said that, I wish that we'd get a totally new game sometime soon. I'd like to see something where you can damage individual limbs, for instance, and a far more advanced blocking system. I like the push-away move in Tekken, but to add depth I would have loved to be able to do a great deal more of blocking moves.

In general, I would really appreciate a move to more realism in the fighting. Hopefully next-gen will bring us something like that eventually, stuff such as used in the new Indy game hopefully leads the way.

I think Super Smash Bros. is the best brawler, hands down!

A reasonable acquaintance with your character -- not the entire cast -- is all you need to avoid a beat down by a button masher.

Based on fun factor:

1. Tekken
2. Soul Calibur
3. DoA
4. Virtua Fighter

I have played only those 4 fighting game series(s).

Yeah I agree, I touched on this in my earlier post, but I just love how it really works with tekken. Even though there are 35+ characters, each has their own fighting style (except for mokujin) and they are all very recognizable. If given the chance I'm sure I could name every single character imitated by mokujin, just by looking at the fighting style/animations.

The PS2 might be seeing MeltyBlood: Act Candeza some time; a fighting game under the used-to-be (but kind of still is) doujin game franchise MeltyBlood based around the popular h-novel/game Tsukihime. I wouldn't say the system is the most intricate, but the game delivers much fun especially when played with others. Fans are watching French Bread (the devs, clearly) *very* closely as there have been hints of a port to the system. Should the game really be ported to PS2, you can be certain my vote will be allocated to "other". :p

Hmmm... I don't know that I consider Virtua Fighter to be a console fighter since its principal platform has always been the arcade machines.

i know one thing, I hate DOA series...

tekken, mortal combat and especialy SOUL CALIBUR are good in my book

well, i think this can be said about all of the poll choices, except for DOA, and possibly GG (i'm not familiar with the history of that title).

Street Fighter II introduced me to the genre and was just hella fun (don't know the diff b/w the various versions). I loved beating the ever living crap out of my buddy with Dhalsim. *Yoga fire!* *Yoga fire!* *Yoga flaaaame!* So it's my favorite; I still think it's really cool. I liked Soul Calibur I & II a lot, too. Fully weapons-based fighting was really a unique idea at the time.

voted Dead or Alive, Street Fighter, and Other, 'cos Fatal Fury and Mai Shiranui should be there.
