Tough choice.... I haven't played most of those. I voted Street Fighter for old time's sake, but I loved Killer Instinct's combos (and the announcer  ).

Street Fighter 2 for 2D and Virtua Fighter for 3D. Not that the others are bad, but both of those emphasized timing, tactics, and using more situational combos and counters than mashing and long series of buttom memorizations. Those can be fun, but when it comes to skill I prefer the former and believe they make for better games.

Two "others". The old N64 Aki Wrestling games. Their WCW and WWF games were outstanding. 2-4 players, story modes, seasons, etc... The gameplay is decidely focused on timing and setting up the opponent. The use of the ring and weapons was very well done, etc. And the create a wrestler mode with THOUSANDS of wrestling moves to choose from was outstanding. As far as fighters go I think you have to consider this series.

The other "other" is none other (oh brother!) than brawlers. I believe games like God of War, Heavenly Sword, etc have evolved where Fighters kind of... left off. Taking the combat into larger worlds, more enemies, strong stories, etc... but taking the idea of a strong combat/fighting system. In many ways I wish traditional fighters would get incorperated into more genres... like RPGs or even 3rd person FPS (e.g. an advanced melee system). But that is just me. Always wanted to create my own battle chess game...

Street fighter 2 - no doubt :)

As acert said - good strategy, feel, combos, graphics (for the time), characters, variety, "world"/environment, etc.

Others are great like soul calibre but not quite the standout that sf2 was.

Also I agree on the topic of the evolution of the "fighter". They need more depth, something new to the table that wasn't possible before. Physics based animation/colision for the fighters and their environments if done correctly could provide this leap from what we know of today and yesterdays fighters into the realm of true "next gen" fighters.

The only ones I care about are Smash Brothers and Virtua Fighter.

Virtua Fighter has the most depth and it's the best and most polished classical fighter I've seen. Smash brothers is tons of fun, especially with lots of people -- it is easy to pick up, there's lots of variety, and there's also a decent amount of depth (more than I expected, actually).

I'm sort of surprised by the lack of Smash Brothers on the poll, considering it was the best selling fighting game this generation, if I recall correctly.

Awesome game. Problem being only 1 out of every nearly 8 consoles sold was a GCN so a lot of people missed it

Soul Calibur is my all time favorite fighting game, then comes Street Fighter and the Marvel Vs. Capcom games. I also really love DOA4 (amazing environments and online play).

Soul Caliber Dreamcast was the best fighting game ever IMO..lots of blunts and 40's playing that one. Then Mortal Combat II.

Where is SSB and Killer Instinct?

KI is def up there with the best 2d fighters. KI2 is great as well. Soul Caliber is an amazing game, but Virtua Fighter 2 - 4 have always been in a league of their own. I don't like Tekken's style at all, and while I liked DOA3, I put it in the same boat as Soul Caliber (don't shoot me); good game, but too easy to string combos together (not as much "skill" required). I've played against some pretty good Virtua Fighter 4 players in Chinatown NYC, and the way the play is simply cool.

edit: I used to own and Xbox and played DOA3 a bunch. Had Soul Caliber + Dreamcast for a while. Played the heck out of Virtua Fighter 2 (my fav fighting game) and not as much of the other 2, though I plaeyd 4 evo a bit.

Heh, comments like this don't speak much for a game in a genre where instant reflexes and pin point accuracy are vital ;) Not that SC is a bad game, quite the opposite...

Street Fighter II turbo on SNES, my favourite version of the game.
(I like super SF2 much less, and the megadrive/genesis versions suck)

Later 2D fighting games are full of combo hit counters, flashing things, special bars and crap and seem to have a lot of combos/special move/crap that you have to learn to gain an unfair avantage on your opponent.
And I played a bit of marvel vs capcom 2 on dreamcast, that one is both quite extreme with the amount of flashing stuff and combo crap, and easily dealt with by smashing buttons and doing random hadoken-like moves that triggers "spectacular" special strikes and characters end up 10 meters above ground.

well, I've said enough :)

3D fighting seems another genre, had a bit of fun with yoshimitsu and its blade in Tekken 1 and 3, that's it. 3D fighting has that delay between button press and effective punch/kick, much less annoying than 3D tennis games, but still I don't want to deal with it.

as for mortal kombat 1 and 2, they were kind of good in the times but if I try to play now I either laugh or cry :p . they got old and ridiculous. that Dragon Ball Z 2 fighting game now sucks as well.
