Australian Launch Reports

MS wasn't childish, I think they were really clever and only pointed out the X360's market presence. Sony was the more hostile one with the official Xbox smashing in that Saturn shop, and has always been; anyone remember Xbox 1.5 and how next generation won't start until Kutaragi announces it?

Again, is Sony responsible for everything like this? If Sony orchestrated it (and that'd be a local Sony, not necessarily the intentions of the over-arching company. Different regions had different approaches to the launch) then boo to them. If the shop organised it, it's not Sony's responsibility.

As for sales, here's a report from a field agent (mate of mine, back from Guildford this morning, talking on Messenger)...

Secret Field Agent Q says:
i was speaking to a bloke in GAME today about the PS3 today. he says that SONT has done a realyly good job of organising PS3 distrubition to all the companies (like GAME, HMV etc) so that they all have their allocated consoles in their own warehouses. that means each store knows exactly what they have to sell and what they can ask for from their respective warehouses...

Secret Field Agent Q says:
...this differs from Nintendo Wii as they getting shipped here and stay sitting in their own Warehouse waiting to be distributed to the GAME, HMV etc warehouses, so the stores have no idea about their allocation and so can say nothing to customers as to when they will get them in

Secret Field Agent Q says:
this meant that GAME sold 150 PS3's yesterday in Guildford (all of their stock for Friday) and got sent today's stock so they could keep selling.

Secret Field Agent Q says:
The guy in GAME said that the disturbtuion and shipping of the Wii is a complete fiasco.

Secret Field Agent Q says:
the XBox 360 wasn't much better at Launch either but Microsoft have sorted that out now

Secret Field Agent Q says:
plus...they know when the next boat load of PS3's is due into England and because the distubtion is so slick they can say with a high degree of confidence when they will get PS3's in as apposed to the Wii...of which they can say nothing

Secret Field Agent Q says:
While in Game today I saw 3 PS3's being sold over the counter and GAME still had about 30% of their stock for Saturday still remaining

Secret Field Agent Q says:
i think because people know they can get one without the panic and rush like the XBox 360 and Wii

Secret Field Agent Q says:
of course the guys in GAME could have been a bunch of Liars in which case none of this is true.....but based on the fact that nobody seems to know when Wii's are coming, I guess some of it must be true.
So if nothing else, Guildford has been positive in uptake of PS3s!

Wow ! We must be on the opposites of the spectrum, because when I saw the scene, I thought of an elephant in a tiny museum : Unelegant !

The Melbourne launch was a little underwhelming as well and a Myer Melbourne rep said they sold 60 units @$999 on launch night and that that was within their expectations.
They have motorstorm running on a giant Sony HD screen at the main entrance which drew some onlookers.

Some stores are letting you buy PS3 for 30% off if you trade in your PS2 and 20 PS2 games.
This is a good deal but it is compensation for Sony's mistake is not offering the cut down version here and doesn't 100% help you with the rest of your PS2 titles.

Sony are marketing the machine along the lines of Fast. Intelligent. Powerful on their billboards.
I would add the words "Expensive" and "Not quite compatible"

Motorstorm in big bold HD was a little underwhelming for me purely because
Sony has hyped PS3 too much. Xbox360 has nothing to worry about in the graphical department.
The math power of PS3 leaves 360 in the dust as physics realism was very impressive
and made the game very immersive.

To me the PS3 in borad terms is a 360 with a HD player and physics card thrown in.
In the long run the math power will distinguish its games from the 360.
This might usher in the 720 a little earlier who knows.

As the people I spoke to who want one, they love it but just aren't buying one.
With Blu-ray in its infancy, a HD format war, limited titles, and the PS2 compatibility issues for
PAL PS3, no cut-down version and the high price are making people pause for thought.

In reference to a previous poster, blaming "the weather" for poor attendance at the launch night,
in a city of 4.2 million people this is just laughable.

The launch here purely and simply just didnt make it into orbit.
