Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag (PS3, X360, PS4, XBOne)

I just heard if you collect the music notes, it adds song for the crew to sing? I had no idea what those were. Cool.

Yup. I finished the Havana ones earlier and the crew started singing a song about Cuba :D

Yeah, cool stuff. I posted a video on Facebook playing the game and they sing two songs there in the sailing part of the video.

Made it public if anyone wants to look, starts with taking down a courier first.

I'm really liking this game, I can't believe I almost overlooked it completely. I am working through the story fairly slowly (sequence 5 now) and unusually (like Far Cry 3) it's not because it's bad, it's just there is so much stuff to get side tracked with. Exploring, collecting, pirating, it's such a great diversity of gameplay.

And wow, a main character who I like! :) Now I bag myself another man-o-war because... well.. because.

You are getting me jealous with your 1080p screenshots of this game.

Finally a real open world pirate-ish decent game!! I think it is a first? Well not counting Wind waker...

Jaguars are a licence to print money, they re-spawn so quick. Kill. Wait. Re-spawn, Kill. Repeat.

I'm tempted by this, I didn't really play much of the first one and the outing on the Vita was pretty good but didn't tag me either. Is this more open world than the others in the series? I quite liked the free form nature of FarCry 3 and, too a lesser extent, Tomb Raider, how does this compare?

It has a large world, filled with many islands. In some ways it is similar to FC3 with the hunting and collecting. Of course the combat is weaker, but it has ship battles!

but it has ship battles!

I'm really liking the ship battles. It took me a fair few tries to get the hang of it but I think it's a fantastic combat mechanic. And the way it ties in to Kenway's Fleet and the second screen apps, is really clever.

There is little as rewarding as being hugely outnumbered and outgunned and slowly outmanouvring a more powerful fleet. Every battle really does play out differently thanks to the sea and the weather. I must have played as much, if not more, at sea than doing the trying Assassin's Creed thing of climbing, sneaking and killing

Link pls. And yes, the ship battles are famntastic, i lost gloriously yesterday when another ship joined into our fight making me flee :p ! Wish they had this in MP instead of that old stuff repeated.

Yeah, there's this mission where you have to kill someone, but if you engage the ship in battle, there's this big galley that comes out to kick your butt. I think I may need to just board the ship and do some stealth instead.

That sounds like a Man-o-war. As you progress you will see more of these, often as part of a fleet and they make great additions to Kenway's fleet because the cargo capacity is in the region of 70-100 items.

The three decks of cannons do a lot of damage but they take an age to reload and the vessels are very slow at manoeuvring. The mortars are the real danger so you have to keep turning erratically and if you try and circle the vessel (keeping on a predictable course) it'll eat you for breakfast. Because it's slow it's very susceptible to mortars itself

I love fighting these things but my ship is now upgraded to the level where it's going to lose. Even when accompanied by a couple of frigates and brigs :devilish:

I got access to the fleet and the Android app, but UPlay was not active. So I decided to buy it (I have my friends disc), but it was free in the store. I'm guessing this is a hold over from the PS3 online pass, but the PS4 doesn't require any such thing. They should have just made it automatic. Anyhow, I'm enjoying making money when away from the game itself!

I didn't follow this, what did you buy? The iOS companion app is definitely free but whether it works without being associated with a UPlay account with a Black Flag console/PC purchase I don't know.

I think for me it wasn't activated at first because PSN was down, but then I activated it later when booting up AC4. So maybe yours wasn't activated for the same reason?

Did you need a code from inside the game box? I thought it was asking for something I didn't have, else why did send me to the store when I clicked "Purchase"?

:???:

This is how it worked for me. I bought Black Flag as a digital download from PSN, once installed I downloaded the companion app from Apple's App Store - this is free. Once I start the companion app it prompts me for my UPlay account details and one input it logs into UPlay. It also connects to my PS4 (which is running AC4) which prompts to to confirm this connection is OK.

I wasn't prompted to purchase or buy anything. The app is free but only seems to offer functionality from within the game itself: fleet management, animus database etc.

My PSN account was already linked to UPlay although I don't remember when I did this so it must be some time back.

I did the same thing, but with the disc every time you start the game it asks you to activate UPlay, buy it or skip.. The companion app would not sync with the PS4 game until I did activate it. I choose "Purchase", but it was free on the PS store. I think the disc comes with a code, but it was at my friends house.

Ah, I think I see. There are two aspects to the companion app but all devices (console/PC, phone, tablet) need to be linked to your UPlay account - everything syncs with Ubi's servers.

As you progress though the main game, Ubi's servers know what you've done so the companion app knows what to show you from the animus database. In addition all of the fleet management stuff runs entirely on Ubi's servers, you need never touch this stuff on the PS4 if don't want too.

Separately there is the direct connection to the PS4 which lets you use your phone/tablet to view the current map and position of the Jackdaw, set waypoints and so on. This really shouldn't require a UPlay account because the app is talking directly to the PS4 but it's all or nothing as far as I can tell.

Does that make sense?

I think so. I assumed at the time the syncing to the console was required to do anything in the app. As I understand it all the reward from the app can be retrieved via going into the cabin? I also was able to chose to send a captured ship to my fleet, that was cool.
