Which is more or less exactly why it doesn't make sense for iD to drop benchmark tools.
Can you imagine the conspiracy theories in the following scenario?
1) Doom3 "benchmark tools unexpectedly dropped"
2) The top ATI cards perform better on Doom than nVidia cards (as determined by FRAPS)
3) Conspiracy conlcusion: iD is doing what it can to hide the fact that ATI has the better card.
If ID is worried about getting caught in some IHV conspiracy theory soap operas, I don't see how including or not including a native benchmarking facility makes much difference.
