As far as power goes, wont there be a point at wich it wont be usefull to try and stick uberhardware in your console? Both HW and SW will cost more and more to produce while what will end up on your screen will have less and less differance with last gen.
Not really. There have been significant differences in every generation of gaming. Consoles are typically upgraded twice a decade, i.e. a 5 year cycle. That 5 year cycle in computer technology is eons worth of time.
PS4/360 will make the current gen look rather tame, just as the current gen make PS2/GC/Xbox look tame. Now frankly, the primary reason the PS3 is so expensive is because of the Bluray drive. You can lop off $100-$200 if you insert a regular DVD drive. Xbox 360 is still expensive because the PS3 was late and is selling poorly. But they could drop that price to $299 if they really wanted to. I don't see this trend really changing much next time around.
That said, there is an ever increasing cost from a SW development standpoint. Unless Sony, MS, and Nintendo come up with some really great asset library and software engine tools, it'll be an increasingly expensive venture for developers to create great games.
That's why I think Nintendo's strategy of staying 1 Generation behind Sony and MS will pay off for them in the long run. Sony and MS have to stay ahead graphically because that's the demographic they're targeting. Nintendo has laid the groundwork this generation to differentiate. That will pay off for software developers as well.
