RE: IBM - Wasn't that just the constant talk of them producing the next Geforce chip in the summer? Since it's not the NV35, and i doubt it's NV36 (although that timeframe matches just as well as the NV40)... They could benefit from the SOI at IBM.
Anyway - Hmm, i really think nVidia are going to push to get the NV40 to shops this year, even if it's only relatively limited online availability. The R-Whateveritscalledthisweek is shaping up to be a very fast solution, and nV really don't want to get left behind again. Given that, in a best case scenario, the NV40 is already going to be 2 months behind ATi, they don't want to push it into next year. The signs are that the management have at last realised just how much trouble they're in, and the importance of pushing very hard for the next few quarters.
As i said in another thread, if they can meet the tapeout date, and get some luck with the first silicon, there shouldn't be much of a problem getting it out in December. And if they can do that, they've set themselves up in a great position for the foreseeable future. With no true next gen tech from ATi due for a long time, they really have got an open field if they play their cards right.
Technology + Lucky Break + Marketting + Wads of "phat" cash = A very happy nVidia CEO. The collapse (well, hmm) of the R400 project could be just what they need to get back in pole position.
Then again, i could have said similar things before the NV30, and look how that turned out. Ho hum.
