With all the Republican/Democrat bickering going around, I figured it'd be interesting just to see what our demographics are here. Oh, and if you're not American, please don't vote! We wouldn't want all those evil European socialists to skew the polls  (jk - Canadian here!)

I think zurich needs to make a "You're an american if...." thread. I think it'd be funny to see what those in the rest of the world think of our little country. :D

I think it'd be funnier to hear what Americans think about the rest of the world ;)

My ex's mother, who was American and had a masters in Chemical Engineering from Harvard, thought that Britain was physically a part of mainland Europe.. as in walk from France to England, no North Sea :?

Oddball example, but still funny as hell

I consider myself to be a conservative republican. I would have voted (not a citizen yet) for Bush. But I would have preferred Alan Keyes for president. :)

Natoma goes into best Republican Right-Wing Pat Buchanan impersonation histrionic mode

Not a citizen, and living in this country? Oh the horror!

And trying to influence our political system? He's a pinko commie bastard! Get him before he can influence our children! Save the children!

heh, I am not American. You don't have to be American to sympathize with conservatives or liberals. Anyhow I voted I am not American though.

EDIT: I do realize though that being an American centerist would make you an extreme right wing nut in Europe who keeps sliding further and further to the left.

im a permanent resident of this country. In other words I have a green card that allows me to work, live in this country. but still have my passport from my country of birth (south africa). I only have 2 years until i get my citizenship. I hope my first presidental vote will be for condelizza rice. :)

BTW I lived illegally in this country for about 14 years.

See? Enemy combatant. He's trying to indoctrinate our christian children with his muslim ways. Oh wait, did I say muslim? I meant hindu. Damn darkies, they're all from the same place anyways. Protect the WASP Nation! Stop immigration!

Natoma leaves his best Republican Right-Wing Pat Buchanan impersonation histrionic mode as it's getting a tad too scary, even for him

Im actually a big proponent of curbing illegal immigration. Id like to see measures that would include building a wall on our border with mexico. Also having the military patrol that and the canadian border.

Damn you. Stop making cogent political points. I'm trying to have fun here! :D

Well, since I'm not a Republican and I'm not a Democrat I can't be an American. I guess all those fascists at the counter-protests were right after all. :? In fact, come to think of it, I didn't even have the option to vote in the poll. :(

What a shame though. If it were not for my county's left wing there would not be elements of the government that support certain terrorist organizations in the mid east. There was even some strong terrorist support expressed on the CBC (a left wing state owned broadcaster that I would shut down.) of in Canada where mid eastern decent government employees expressing support for Osama bin laden calling for Canadians to support his work. The outrage was so loud that the CBC was defending itself for ages afterwards. If it were not for the liberals we could still brag of the worlds longest ungaurded boarder.

Really? I don't begrudge you your right to be hypocritical, but I'm curious why as a former illegal yourself you now have these views. My very brief time as an undocumented illegal in Italy last fall (and the experience of my friends who were illegals for much longer, one of whom actually got caught and deported) has left me even more in favor of liberalizing immigration practices.

Of course there are the obvious economic benefits. But in the age of international terrorism, it seems slam-dunk obvious that we should be legalizing as much immigration as possible, so that we can keep better track of potential terrorists who would enter legally but currently do not, and so that we can take the economic viability out of the undocumented entry industry. For the same reason that legalizing drugs would eliminate drug trade related crime, and just as ending Prohibition ended alcohol trade related crime.

If the only people who need to enter illegally are terrorists, it will be inordinately easier to catch them. First because they will not be mixed in with the other 30 million (or whatever) illegals in the US. Second because the vast infrastructure that now exists to enable illegal migration will go away once it is needed only as a means to evade tracking and not because there is no other way to move to the US. Third because the public will rightly support more effective enforcement against illegal immigration when benign migrants have a legal route to enter the country.

But enough about me. Why are you so keen to prevent others from taking advantage of the opportunities you have?

And BTW, I'm independent, as I think most Americans are. I generally lean Democrat, although recently both parties have appeared increasingly distasteful to me...

So, this poll doesn't get my vote either.

Hmm, I came to this country when I was very small(about 10). So your saying that because my parents made me come here I should have liberal views on illegal immigration? Look I had no choice at the time on where we lived so my views today should not have to be based on decisions made by my parents.

Btw I am against illegal immigration not immigration. I think legal immigration should be increased. but those who want to come to this country illegally should be stopped from getting in. See the difference. :)

Ok, that would explain it. Although I can't believe it wouldn't have affected your views somewhat, and I'm interested in why it affected them the way it did. You have a unique perspective, is what I'm saying. Not that your history should obligate you to have a particular view; that's completely wrong.

I do indeed. And I agree for the most part, although given that the rules are the way they are, and that so many millions of people break them (and thus that enforcement is more a matter of bad luck than anything else), I'm not sure how I feel about beefing up enforcement in the absence of other reforms.

The reason Im against illegal immigration is mainly because of security. After 9/11 i think we would want to know is in this country legally or illegally. We have some idea of the legals, but the illegals we have no idea. So we need to crack down on them.

Also there are many illegals (mainly from mexico) who come to this country to spoonge off the benefits that they dont have in their native country. Ill elaborate more later, time for some sleep. :)

later,

Speaking as somebody who's house was built by mostly illegal immigrants, I can guarantee that (at least in Texas) Mexicans aren't here to sponge off of our benefits, but to perform jobs that most Americans won't for the price we're willing to pay.

Most of them won't touch a government office due to the hassle of being deported.
