A question about Unreal Engine 3 demo shown at E3.

The Unreal Engine 3 demo at E3, was it running on nv40 or R420 ? (or on both perhaps ?)

If both : any coments if either of them ran it better than the other ?

Cheers.

It was indeed running on both at GDC, some claim the R420 was running it faster but at this point it's just a rumor.

Not sure if it was running on both at E3.

Rampage? *grins* You are so behind your times, friend! Haven't you heard?
A few fanatic 3DFX engineers never truly quitted the company... Why do you think the paperwork to make it die is going so slowly? Because it's all just a big lie. It's not over yet. You've all been manipulated by NVIDIA's PR and IR - they never bought all the 3DFX IP. Only a small portion of it.

That rumor came from a troll who claimed that the NV40 was running both at lower resolutions and was running the demo terribly. This was blatantly false, and was countered by representatives of Epic.

Both video cards ran the E3 demo at similar performance, but I think there was more high dynamic range stuff going on with the NV40, due to support of FP framebuffer blending. I claim this not because I saw much about the E3 demo, but because it was claimed to be the way that Epic implemented HDR in the demo they presented (of which there are videos) at the NV40 launch.

I heard it from more then one person. Now, granted the source you're referring to is questionable and I know the NV40 did not run it 'terribly', but it's possible the demo was running slightly faster on the X800. This would seem to be in line with preliminary benchmarks; Far Cry for instance. We haven't seen UE3 on the X800 yet short for the few who got to see it at GDC.

I also take everything Epic says with a grain of salt. They haven't exactly given me a reason not to.

And what reason have they given you to not trust them? Please don't say it's because of TWIMTBP. . .

They're TWIWMTBP. That speaks for itself. What, are they going to say 'Oh, the ATI card ran it faster'? If you think that, I'm going to have to laugh.

And what would you say if the ATI card actually -did- run slower?

Clearly JHH bribed Sweeney with women and cigars to cripple Radeon performance.
Heck, I'd go for it. ;)

Actually, I've realized some of the rediculousness of my statement. [sarcasm]If it's a TWIMTBP, of course they'll make NVidia perform better![/sarcasm] Not that I believe any of that crap.

on NV40 - GeForce 6800 (probably Ultra) at around 15 to 20 frames per second.

I'm sure R420 - Radeon X800 was running it at a similar framerate.

both well under 30fps.

I'd imagine that R500 and NV50 will get 30+ fps in Unreal Engine 3

then R600 and NV60, graphics processors released the same year (2006) will rip through Unreal Engine 3 and games based on it at 60fps.

Epic is heavily influenced by nvidia, more so then any other developer. Bribing them with woman and cigars may sound rediculous but you'd be surprised how much money talks. The fact that they're adding SM3.0 support to a game that doesn't even heavily use DX8 should speak volumes. It's just another nvidia can add to their list of TWIMTBP games that 'support' SM3.0 so they can refer to it when pushing SM3.0 as the main feature of their card versus the competitor.

Epic haven't exactly lied about anything, but then again you'll never hear them say ATI's card runs the game faster, even if it does.
